The position

As a Mangrove Ecologist in the Environmental Engineering team, you will be part of a versatile, dynamic and ambitious team that stands for corporate social responsibility and that makes a difference every single day. You are involved in wind, dredging and offshore projects all over the world from tender phase to project implementation. The ideal candidate can be assigned on projects for the Dutch market as well as international projects. Travelling abroad is required sometimes in this position.

As a member of the Environmental Engineering team the Mangrove Ecologist is a social, innovative and enthusiastic thinker that is involved in many aspects like developing and implementing environmental & ecological management strategies and plans related to project setup/design and work method during tender and execution phase. But also, managing risks related to project documentation and permit requests and compliance with permits within the tender/project environment. It is a benefit if you are a well-organized team player that can also work independently. What else are you involved in:

  • (Co-)Authoring and reviewing complex technical documents and articles for terrestrial, coastal and offshore ecosystems.
  • Scoping and executing nearshore and offshore marine ecological monitoring programs.
  • Initiating and participating in the set-up of research proposals and experiments on different ecological topics.
  • Communicating and discussing project execution plans, risks and opportunities to/with stakeholders within the tender/project environment.
  • Participating in technical discussions with Clients and external stakeholders on different ecological topics.
  • Developing and translating innovative and sustainable applications towards specific projects (e.g. Building with Nature design, ecodesign).
  • Ideally, connecting ecological developments to the projects’ CO2 footprint.
  • Creating social and environmental awareness and commitment of all (project) employees of Van Oord.
  • Supervising / coaching junior environmental engineers.

About you

  • MSc or PhD degree in ecology or environmental sciences with a strong focus on marine or freshwater systems
  • Minimum of 4-6 years of scientific and/or technical experience working in related technical field, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in designing and participating in (large) research and monitoring programs
  • Experience managing relationships with clients, subcontractors and research organizations
  • Affiliation with marine dredging and/or offshore wind construction projects in relation to ecological / environmental issues.
  • Ability to write and review complex technical documents, perform high level statistical analyses, manage large GIS and remote sensing data bases and lead field crews in complex logistical settings.
  • Good social and communication skills but also creative and result-oriented attitude.
  • Excellent command of the English language, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong networking and presentation skills.
