The Innovation Center Process Technology group is seeking an eager, hands-on, pro-active intern to support Technicians and Scientists in developing new innovative processes for the food or biochemical industries, or to improve existing processes. The Process Technology group is one of the core technologies of Corbion’s Innovation Center at our location in Gorinchem, the largest R&D site of Corbion worldwide, with labs, office space, and pilot plants. This site also houses the largest lactic acid derivative production facility, serving our core business units.

The role

The intern will support the development of process technology solutions for Corbion’s Food & Ingredients Business. You will contribute to the practical execution of different projects, as well as to the safety and order of the labs.

As an Intern (Process Development), you should have a solid scientific background in process development related to chemicals and/or food (liquid and solid processing), and be able to work independently on support activities and in teams on innovation or process optimization projects. A can-do attitude and the ability to work on multiple activities at once are essential. You should enjoy an informal workplace, be pragmatic, and be able to communicate, read, and write in English. Practical work in a laboratory and/or pilot setting should appeal to you.

The intern will be guided by members of the R&D process development group. The internship will last 5 months and consist of benchwork and/or pilot work, analysis of samples, and analysis of data at Corbion. The internship will culminate in a written report and oral presentation to Corbion.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design, development, implementation, and operation of bench and pilot scale experiments
  • Prepare experimental design, planning, and execution of research in consultation with the Technician B or Senior Technician
  • Assist and set up SOPs for bench and pilot scale equipment/processes/assays
  • Support with the analysis, interpretation, and processing of results of experiments, monitor experiments
  • Ensure documentation and reporting of procedures and results according to Corbion standards. Report methods, results, and techniques used
  • Contribute to multi-disciplinary projects and actively participate on project teams
  • Actively participate in maintaining the facilities, equipment, and safety in the labs
  • Establish and maintain strong standards of safety and housekeeping in the assigned area

About you

We are looking for an enthusiastic Bio-/Chemical R&D Intern (Process Development – Downstream Processing) with a passion for innovation, sustainability, process development, and improvement.

A successful candidate meets the following criteria:

  • Eager to gain experience in laboratory and pilot scale test set ups and experimenting, ideally in downstream process (DSP) units related to solids (e.g. spray drying, granulation) and/or liquids (e.g. crystallization, extraction, adsorption, evaporation, solid-liquid separation)
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken)
  • Team player
  • Problem solving skills
  • Good communicator
  • Pragmatic, pro-active, independent, hands-on, and can-do mentality
