Student Internship: Offshore Wind Farm Transport & Installation Models at Vattenfall

Modelling and Optimization (M&O) is the team in Vattenfall responsible for developing tools that optimize and calculate the business cases of our Offshore Windfarms. These tools are used to create competitive bids and allow us to win tenders (such as the recently won Ijmuiden Ver Beta) while creating optimal designs and knowing what we bid for.

This involves many different domains, one of which is the transport and installation of all the components in the wind farm, including foundations, wind turbine generators, and cables, but also decommissioning the entire wind farm at the end of the lifetime.

The offshore wind industry is constantly developing. Therefore, to keep our business cases up to date, our models are also constantly evolving. You would help us with creating new transport and installation models, so that we can model the newest technologies in our upcoming business cases.

An engineering team within Vattenfall specialized in transport and installation has created various detailed Excel models, of which we would like to replicate the functionality into the modelling suite of Modelling & Optimization which is based on Matlab & Python. Examples of these models are the decommissioning of the offshore wind farm (which includes calculating decommissioning schedules and costs for various components), and the installation of new foundation types, such as gravity-based foundations or floating foundations. Which model to focus on depends both on the urgency and on your interest.

You will collaborate extensively with the experts who created the Excel models, and together you will scope how to implement the model. In M&O we have a holistic view of the entire wind farm, the challenge is therefore understanding how the model links to various parts of the offshore windfarm and creating a generic model that can be used for all kinds of projects.

Your supervisor will be available for support. It is expected, however, that you will take ownership of this project, and drive it forward independently.

You will write the code for the model yourself, and learn how to work with the following (it is not expected that you know already how to do this):

• git/source-control
• unit-testing
• model documentation in Markdown

Next to improving your modelling capabilities, you will also get an understanding of everything that is involved on a business case scale.
