Make your mark on our time as a Scientist Energy Transition Studies at TNO in Amsterdam!

The Techno Economic Energy Transition Studies (TES) research group works with an international, multidisciplinary team of social scientists, engineers, and economists on techno-economic policy issues within the energy transition. The research focuses on technical and economic innovations at the energy system level, including networks and markets for electricity, heating & cooling and hydrogen. This knowledge is used to calculate future energy scenarios and transition paths to underpin the impact of policy choices at an early stage. Are you ready to accelerate the energy and materials transition and build a fully circular economy? Join TNO as a Scientist Innovator.

What will be your role?

The TES research group consists of about 50 professionals with backgrounds in econometrics, chemistry, physics, economics, energy science & technology, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. We are looking for a Scientist Innovator for the Energy Market Systems expertise team.

The team focuses on issues of energy policy and regulation in the energy market. For example, its members calculate how the incorporation of green hydrogen or offshore wind will affect prices or to what extent energy demand management affects the stress on energy infrastructure. Modellers work on the numerical analyses and underpinnings in various complex energy market models. Based on this knowledge, policy recommendations are made regarding the development of this complex energy market and the extent to which managing the market with policy instruments is desirable.

What will you be doing?

As a Scientist Innovator you will be part of a team working on various projects in the field of energy market systems. The goal of this work is to support decision-making for a low-carbon energy transition in the Netherlands and Europe. In this position you have an essential role in collecting and assessing technical and economic data on electricity, transport, heating, industry and related technologies; in using these data to conduct research with (optimization) energy system models; analysing and reporting the results for both policy and scientific audiences; translate technical knowledge to understandable, attractive, and convincing stories.

The results of your research will have scientific merits, but will also help government, industry, and other stakeholders to make far-reaching decisions that shape our future society. You will also play a proactive role in initiating new research projects.

What we expect from you

Naturally, you are interested in the techno-economic aspects of the energy transition, and passionate to make a difference in society through innovation. You are analytical and eager to solve complex problems, together with your colleagues.

You enjoy communicating with peers, including those from other disciplines such as technology experts, chemistry scientists, modelers, et cetera. You are capable of independently undertaking research tasks and enjoy working in a team. To disseminate research findings and advise our customers, strong communication and reporting skills are essential. You seek connections between themes such as sustainable energy generation, materials transition and incorporate them into new research projects.

You are passionate to make a difference in society through innovation, you are persistent and result driven and enjoy finding your way in a dynamic project organization. You are eager to solve complex problems, together with your colleagues. Ideally, you already have a strong affinity with quantitative energy analysis or modelling.

What you bring to the table:

  • You have an MSc in environmental or energy sciences, applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, econometrics or a related discipline.
  • You already have some experience in energy system modelling or in quantitative analysis related to energy and/or environmental issues.
  • You already have some experience with, or possess an interest in, writing scientific publications and/or policy reports in these fields.
  • You have the ability to readily familiarize yourself with the research methods that are used in the field of energy market systems.
  • You have experience with programming languages (e.g. Python), and preferably experience with optimization languages (e.g. Julia, GAMS and AIMMS), and data-intensive analysis and visualisation.
  • You are able to work in a team as well as independently and you possess an engaging, motivated and proactive attitude, capable of working in an international network of scientists.
  • Your oral and written skills in English, and Dutch, are excellent.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3,385 and € 5,958 (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
