Student Life Counselor (0.4 fte)

Leiden University College offers a selective honors Bachelor in Liberal Arts and Sciences: Global Challenges to talented students from all over the world. In their first two years of the three-year program, students live on campus in our own college building in The Hague. To support residential and academic life, LUC has a student support system including a Student Life Officer, Resident Assistants, Study Advisors, Academic Advisors, and two Student Life Counselors. We currently have a vacancy for a Student Life Counselor (SLC). We are looking for a qualified psychologist interested in supporting a diverse group of young people.

What you will do

  • As a student psychologist, you supervise and treat students individually for short-term targeted counseling. You keep sufficient documentation about student cases according to university standards.
  • You provide short-term psychological help to groups of students with a comparable psychosocial problem that influences study progress.
  • You participate in developing and providing students with workshops and skills trainings relevant to the university context.
  • You maintain contact with support and academic staff at LUC, advise them on the structure of prevention programs and ensure implementation. In complex cases, you take the lead in finding solutions and coordinating with relevant parties and/or with the head of the Student Support Services department.
  • You ensure the accommodation of students with disabilities and other extenuating circumstances in collaboration with Leiden University’s Disability Centre Fenestra.
  • You work together with the Study Advisors and the Student Life Officer and contribute to the training and supervision of the Residential Assistants.

The Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs is  an internationally acclaimed academic knowledge hub that studies world-wide issues from the varied perspectives of governance, politics, law, sociology and economics. We contribute to far-reaching socio-cultural debate through our acquired knowledge. We aim to do this not only through education and research, but also by organizing lectures and debates to learn from. The faculty’s scientific research is organized around a number of centers and institutes in The Hague, city of peace and justice. Staff members conduct research in fields such as global politics, public administration, security, and urban issues. Complex issues are examined from an interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary perspective.

What you bring

  • You have, at minimum, a master’s degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology (or another relevant degree)
  • You are registered as a BIG- or NIP-psychologist or psychotherapist in The Netherlands.
  • You have experience working with young people and students in international environments.
  • You are sensitive to the challenges of working and learning in a diverse community and are committed to contribute to an inclusive atmosphere at the college.
  • You are supportive and approachable but also able to be firm and draw boundaries when needed.
  • You have excellent oral and written skills in both Dutch and English. The required level of English is set at level C1 (active and passive). The working knowledge of additional languages is welcome.
  • Previous experience with residential settings as well as gifted learners is welcome.
  • Demonstrable expertise in the field of suicide prevention or emergency intervention is welcome.

The appointment is initially temporary for one year. Renewal depends on performance, need and funding. The salary will be in the usual range for a Student Psychologist; the level depends on previous experience and ranges from €3.378, - to € 5.331,- gross per month (pay scale 10), in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.  

We also offer:

  • A holiday allowance (8%), an end-of-year bonus (8,3%), and an attractive pension scheme at ABP;
  • Full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs for home-to-work travel;
  • Flexible working hours: as a standard, you are entitled to a minimum of 29 leave days on the basis of a full-time working week of 38 hours; you can also save for extra leave, for example by working 40 hours a week, and in this way accrue an extra 96 leave hours, or exchange 96 leave hours for a 36-hour week.
  • Lots of options when it comes to secondary employment conditions; we can, for example, discuss options for a sabbatical or paid parental leave. Within our terms of employment individual choices model, you can exchange leave days and/or salary for benefits such as an advantageous sports subscription or bicycle scheme, and we also offer child-care options;
  • A home-working allowance (day and internet allowance) and attention for good workplaces. The University will also provide you with a laptop. Please note that this position will be mainly working on campus.
  • All our PhD students are embedded in the Graduate School of Governance and Global Affairs. Our graduate school offers several PhD training courses at three levels: professional courses, skills training and personal effectiveness.
  • You have (near) native proficiency in Dutch and English (or willingness to master a C1 level of fluency in Dutch within two years, with funding being provided by the institute);
