How do you make our customers happy?

By ensuring our 900+ engineers have the tools they need to ship scalable, quality code at high speed so our 13.7 million customers experience nary a glitch, delay, or frustration. As Product Manager Developer Experience, you’ll own the internal products that transform how engineers build, test, deploy, and operate software. As such, you’ll ‘engineer’ both developer and customer happiness: when engineers can focus on solving issues instead of wrestling with dev tools, customers always benefit.

The biggest challenge

Creating tools that engineers want to use. How do you balance standardization and scalability with the flexibility and autonomy engineers desire? How do you condense a sprawling toolkit without sacrificing capabilities? Success starts with understanding what makes developers tick—from the senior architect who needs deep insights to the junior engineer drowning in documentation. You’ll need to prevent tool sprawl and accelerate innovation, striking the right balance between governance and freedom. Can you make a curated toolset that’s compelling to use?

What you'll do as Product Manager Developer Experience

As a key member of our Platform Engineering Productivity team, you’ll shape how 900+ engineers tackle their work. You’ll own our developer portal (built on Backstage) and the entire development tool ecosystem—from service discovery to deployment pipelines. Working closely with platform engineers, designers, and “customers” (our developers), you’ll transform friction points into flow states.

You’ll need to blend strategic thinking with tactical execution. One moment, you’re mapping the developer journey to identify pain points; the next, you’re in a design session reimagining how engineers discover internal services. You’ll champion the developer’s voice, guided by feedback and hard data. Whether you’re consolidating five tools into one coherent design or adding features to obviate a new standalone tool, the impact of your decisions ripples across the organization. As a leader without formal authority, you’ll influence through expertise. You’ll build traction for your ideas, demonstrate value through quick wins, and slowly but surely transform how engineers operate. Your success will not be measured in features shipped but in time saved, frustration prevented, and—yes—developer happiness scores.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Define and execute the product strategy for our engineering productivity solutions
  • Lead user research initiatives (cross-functional) to identify pain points and workflow bottlenecks
  • Incorporate insights into ‘your’ roadmap, balancing quick wins with strategic evolution
  • Reduce cognitive load, improve discoverability, streamline common tasks, and enhance integration across the developer ecosystem
  • Champion developer-centricity and strike the right balance between standardization and engineering autonomy
  • Prevent tool sprawl through ingeniously integrated solutions
  • Transform feedback into features that developers actually thank you for

Why you can make a difference

You combine product management expertise with genuine empathy for developers’ needs. With 5+ years of PM experience (ideally in developer tools and/or internal platforms), you know that building for developers is unlike building for other audiences—they’re resourceful, skeptical, and inclined to route around obstacles. Your technical prowess helps you speak their language and evaluate their every ask. You’re data-driven, but know that some impacts can’t be measured in sprint velocity. Most importantly, you believe a great developer experience is a competitive advantage, not a nice-to-have. You’re ready to GROW the platform, OBSESS over developer needs, and WIN by making bol’s engineering environment objectively excellent.

What we’re not looking for:

  • Tool tyrant Your idea of platform governance involves mandatory adoption meetings and threatening emails
  • Metric megalomaniac Whatever you can't measure in DORA metrics isn’t worth pursuing—including developer happiness
  • Ivory tower architect You don’t need developers to tell you what works or what they need

What we are looking for:

  • Platform powerhouse You think internal tools should get the same attention to detail as customer-facing systems
  • Developer whisperer You can translate between "I need kubectl access" and "I need to deploy safely"—and deliver
  • Complexity composer You thrive in environments where your users could whip up alternatives to pretty much any tool they don’t like

Where you'll work

You’ll join our Engineering Productivity team, a group of platform pioneers dedicated to making bol’s engineering experience world-class. We’re part of Platform Engineering, where about 50 colleagues ensure our technical foundation scales with our ambitions. The culture blends Silicon Valley innovation with Dutch directness—we debate fiercely, decide quickly, implement pragmatically, and share fanatically. With 2,900 colleagues serving 13.7 million customers and 47,000 partners, your work touches every engineer and – by extension – every customer. The atmosphere? Picture a hackathon that never ends but with better coffee and a healthy work-life balance. Ready to team up?
