Research in animals has provided crucial insights into the brain's functioning and has enabled the development of treatments for many medical conditions. Studying animal behaviour is a central component in this research. Recent developments in artificial intelligence allow vastly refined tracking, which provides unprecedented insights into the emotive state of animals. A particularly important state is distress or pain, which animals might undergo due to experimental procedures or struggles with cage mates. We are developing a cutting-edge automatic monitoring system that will allow the study of audiovisual behaviour and in particular distress in real time. This system will become a key tool for the study of animal communication and well-being in particular in the context of the study of animal models for neurodevelopmental disorders.
We are looking for a talented candidate to join our labs as a postdoctoral researcher in Neuroscience/Biology. Your project will be to spearhead validation of this audiovisual monitoring system, working closely with the developers of the system. Together with the validation you will study the neural basis of neurodevelopmental and stress-related disorders in animal models that are tested during specific social interactions.
The core of the project will consist of planning, conducting, analysing and publishing behavioural experiments with rodents, in particular their social interactions in terms of vocalizations and behavior, with neural recordings in a subset of experiments. The outcome of the project will have a positive impact on the understanding of social interactions in animal models for major psychiatric disorders and on the refinement of animal experiments through improved audiovisual monitoring.
Work and science require good employment practices. Radboud University's primary and secondary employment conditions reflect this. You can make arrangements for the best possible work-life balance with flexible working hours, various leave arrangements and working from home. You are also able to compose part of your employment conditions yourself. For example, exchange income for extra leave days and receive a reimbursement for your sports membership. In addition, you receive a 34% discount on the sports and cultural activities at Radboud University as an employee. And, of course, we offer a good pension plan. We also give you plenty of room and responsibility to develop your talents and realise your ambitions. Therefore, we provide various training and development schemes.
You will be working with a team of supervisors, consisting of Prof. Judith Homberg and Associate Prof. Bernhard Englitz. Both are PIs at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour. Prof. Homberg is part of the Donders Centre for Medical Neuroscience and a leading expert in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Englitz is part of the Donders Centre for Neuroscience, and focuses on computational approaches in neuroscience, in this project in particular with respect to the tracking of social interaction of rodents. Both PIs are internationally renowned in their fields and are experienced in supervising and collaborating together. With this project we aim to propel the Donders Institute to the forefront of studying animal behaviour using machine learning, with a particular focus on distress monitoring.
Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science (FNWI), part of Radboud University, engages in groundbreaking research and excellent education. In doing so, we push the boundaries of scientific knowledge and pass that knowledge on to the next generation. We seek solutions to major societal challenges, such as cybercrime and climate change and work on major scientific challenges, such as those in the quantum world. At the same time, we prepare our students for careers both within and outside the scientific field. Currently, more than 1,300 colleagues contribute to research and education, some as researchers and lecturers, others as technical and administrative support officers. The faculty has a strong international character with staff from more than 70 countries. Together, we work in an informal, accessible and welcoming environment, with attention and space for personal and professional development for all. Radboud University
At Radboud University, we aim to make an impact through our work. We achieve this by conducting groundbreaking research, providing high-quality education, offering excellent support, and fostering collaborations within and outside the university. In doing so, we contribute indispensably to a healthy, free world with equal opportunities for all. To accomplish this, we need even more colleagues who, based on their expertise, are willing to search for answers. We advocate for an inclusive community and welcome employees with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. Will you also contribute to making the world a little better? You have a part to play.
