The Virtual Power Plant (VPP) team is responsible for designing and implementing a decentralized energy management system that connects and optimizes energy generation and consumption across a network of distributed assets. This includes our proprietary devices—such as the Quatt Hybrid, our All-Electric system, and the Chill—alongside 3rd party devices like solar panels, batteries, electric vehicle chargers, and other distributed energy resources. The goal is to seamlessly integrate these assets into the grid, supporting grid stability and maximizing energy efficiency.

As Tech Lead for our VPP initiative, you will play a critical role in shaping the technical architecture of our energy management platform. The system must be scalable, resilient, and capable of handling massive volumes of real-time data while integrating diverse energy assets. You will guide architectural decisions, ensuring seamless interoperability across different systems, and provide hands-on leadership to a talented development team. Given the importance of this software in controlling all assets, you will also contribute to architecture decisions beyond the VPP, ensuring technical alignment across Quatt’s entire ecosystem.

What you will do:

• Own the technical architecture of the Virtual Power Plant (VPP), ensuring scalability, reliability, and high performance.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership, coding alongside and guiding engineers in system design, software development best practices, and cloud-based architectures.
• Design and oversee interoperability between different systems, ensuring a seamless integration of energy assets.
• Work closely with product management, data engineering, control systems, and embedded systems teams to align on technical direction and feature prioritization.
• Lead architecture decisions that ensure flexibility and maintainability, while keeping security and reliability at the forefront.
• Oversee end-to-end development processes, from initial concept to production deployment, ensuring high-quality, timely deliveries.
• Mentor and manage a team, fostering an environment of continuous learning and innovation, and be actively involved in hiring and team building.
• Work closely with stakeholders, including the energy operations, sales, and customer support teams, to ensure the EMS aligns with business needs and regulatory requirements.
• Actively contribute to technical discussions, troubleshooting, and architectural reviews, ensuring our system is resilient and adaptable.

Job requirements

What you’ll need:

• Passion for making a positive impact on the world and fighting climate change through innovative energy solutions.
• 10+ years of experience in software development with a strong focus on backend and systems architecture, ideally with experience in designing scalable, distributed systems.
• Proven experience as a senior engineer, solution architect, or tech lead, with expertise in designing and scaling software platforms.
• Strong technical leadership abilities, including team management, mentorship, and a collaborative, hands-on approach to problem-solving.
• Expertise in asynchronous messaging systems, microservices architectures, and real-time data processing, particularly in .NET, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure providers (Azure & AWS) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, Pulumi).
• Security-first mindset, with experience handling sensitive data and ensuring platform reliability in a distributed environment.
• Effective communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into business value for cross-functional teams.
• High level of energy, initiative, and a continuous learning mindset, ready to adapt to the dynamic needs of a fast-growing company.
• Familiarity with Databricks, Python, and control systems are a plus.
