Want to make your mark on our time? Become a R&D Scientist at TNO in Nijmegen!

About this position

Are you passionate about cutting-edge semiconductor packaging technologies? Do you thrive in a multidisciplinary research environment where innovation leads to real-world impact? At CITC, we offer a great opportunity to shape the future of advanced chip packaging technologies. If you’re ready to make a difference in semiconductor packaging, this is your chance!

What will be your role?

The Chip Integration Technology Center (CITC) in Nijmegen is a leading non-profit innovation center. We are a non-profit, joint innovation hub specializing in heterogeneous integration and advanced chip packaging technologies. At CITC, we foster a vibrant ecosystem where companies, research institutions, and educational bodies collaborate to bridge the gap between academia and industry. Together, we are pioneering the next generation of smart, safe, and durable chip packages.

Our mission is to provide access to cutting-edge innovation, infrastructure, and education, with the goal of becoming a leading partner in semiconductor and photonics packaging. Established in 2019 with strategic partners TNO and Delft University of Technology, and supported by local and regional governments, CITC is ideally located on the Noviotech Campus in Nijmegen, at the heart of the Dutch semiconductor industry. This role is primarily based in Nijmegen, but you will also work occasionally in Eindhoven. Join us and be part of a pioneering team shaping the future of semiconductor packaging!

What will you be doing?

As an R&D Scientist in Advanced Semiconductor Chip Packaging, you will be at the forefront of developing next-generation high-performance chip packaging solutions for applications such as automotive radar, photonics, and power electronics. Your expertise will contribute to CITC’s fan-out packaging platform, leveraging deep knowledge in large-area processing, thin-film electronics, and additive manufacturing.

You will be involved in designing, fabricating, and characterizing advanced semiconductor packages, collaborating with leading industry partners and multidisciplinary experts. A key aspect of your role is to translate industry needs into innovative technology solutions, ensuring scalability, reliability, and manufacturability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize advanced semiconductor packaging technologies for high-performance applications.
  • Design, fabricate, and conduct reliability testing of next-generation semiconductor packages.
  • Perform experimental research and process modeling to enhance manufacturability and reliability.
  • Collaborate with industry partners and stakeholders to align R&D efforts with market needs.
  • Generate intellectual property (IP) and contribute to scientific publications.
  • Work on process development and technology innovation for heterogeneous integration.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary collaborations and work with leading industry players in the semiconductor sector.
  • Mentor and support junior researchers, fostering an environment of knowledge sharing and innovation.

What we expect from you

  • A Master’s degree (MSc) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of R&D experience in advanced semiconductor chip packaging (experience with fan-out packaging technologies is a plus).
  • Strong expertise in reliability testing, process modeling.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, interpretation, and technical reporting.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (both written and verbal).
