As Principal Systems Engineer in the Philips business venture “FORS,” you hold a pivotal role where you can disrupt MedTech and make a real difference for patients. The FORS proposition is new to the world and a crucial step in our Image Guided Therapy (IGT) purpose of treating patients better by innovating minimally invasive procedures. The customer-centric, fast-learning, and agile FORS venture team values drive, creativity, and fast decision-making in an integral business context.

This role will give you the chance to join our exciting journey. You will be at the forefront of technological innovation, working on cutting-edge projects that push the boundaries of what is possible in medical technology. Your contributions will directly impact the development and implementation of advanced fiber optic technologies that enhance the precision and effectiveness of minimally invasive procedures.

By joining our team, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with top-tier professionals in the field, gain exposure to a wide range of medical applications, and contribute to the overall mission of improving patient outcomes. The dynamic and entrepreneurial environment of the FORS venture will provide you with the flexibility to explore new ideas, take calculated risks, and drive meaningful change within the organization. Your role will be instrumental in shaping the future of medical technology and ensuring that our innovations meet the highest standards of quality and performance.

Your role:

  • Define scope and problem domain in a crisp and structured way: define the problem with stakeholders and identify key issues.
  • Create well-defined building blocks/system options & scenarios for improving FORS navigation performance; choose the optimal design, leverage technology, and contribute to/drive roadmaps; establish control points (both IP and proprietary algorithms).
  • Design, realize, and test key (sub) systems, understanding and communicating consequences of the design on the overall system architecture.
  • Contribute/lead communication, from a technical perspective, with relevant stakeholders, both internal and external Philips, including suppliers.
  • Contribute to innovation strategies and roadmaps together with management and the business, and build new competencies, on both personal and team levels, or extend existing ones that have potential to contribute significant value to the business and its continuity.
  • Ensure solid, up-to-date, and usable documentation of the architecture and implementation thereof (design specifications, schematics, drawings, codes, and writing test scenarios for the developed modules or components); use methods & tools for a structured approach.
  • Generate initiatives with regard to technological improvements and perform future-oriented studies in dialogue with other specialists, with an emphasis on mastery of the professional field and shifting its frontiers.
  • Draw up personal/team schedules and report on progress in a structured and methodical way, and be responsible for keeping the costs of the activities in line with the calculated budget and delivering input in the planning process to the project leader/program manager.

You're the right fit if:

  • You have a PhD in technical sciences (e.g., physics, electrotechnical engineering), with an optics/photonics-related specialization, or you have a track record showing mastery of optics / photonics.
  • You have a strong track record of experimental work in the field of fiber optics, lasers, and optical sensing, with profound analytical skills and a systematic problem-solving approach.
  • You can independently design and implement R&D activities, including establishing technical requirements, testing hypotheses, improving prototyping and manufacturing activities, designing experimental setups, developing protocols, and analysis methods.
  • You have 5+ years of experience working in an industrial R&D environment, overseeing the whole innovation chain from fundamental research to industrial design and product development.
  • You have experience dealing with suppliers, including managing technical communications and ensuring alignment with project requirements.
  • You are capable of taking on a helicopter view, understanding the complexity of your working environment, both from a technical and organizational point of view.
  • You are curious and a fast learner, eager to quickly pick up new areas and challenge the way things are done. You have an interest in continuously taking on new challenges and learning to deliver results in a complex and multi-disciplinary environment.
  • You can execute planned activities, whilst inspiring and leading team members in supporting them.
  • You are proactive, results-driven, hands-on, with a getting-things-done mentality.
  • You are a team player, capable of working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • You have a passionate personality with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with (medical) product development projects, from initial concept up to and including release for delivery is considered a plus.

How we work together

We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 3 days per week. Onsite roles require full-time presence in the company’s facilities. Field roles are most effectively done outside of the company’s main facilities, generally at the customers’ or suppliers’ locations.
