About this job

We are currently looking for a System Engineer to join the team in the Leiden Area.

We are looking for a System Engineer to join an innovative engineering team specializing in high-tech motion control solutions. In this role, you will work on advanced mechatronic systems for applications in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and industrial testing. You will contribute to the development, integration, and optimization of complex systems, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to design cutting-edge solutions that meet customer and industry requirements.

You will play a key role in both customer-specific development projects and new technology initiatives, ensuring system performance, compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and seamless integration of hardware and software components. This is an opportunity to work in a collaborative and technically challenging environment, where innovation and expertise come together to develop next-generation engineering solutions.

Main responsibilities

  • Develop and implement high-performance motion control and test systems for diverse applications.
  • Design system architectures, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Apply modelling and simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink) to validate system behavior.
  • Conduct risk assessments, including Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Requirements Management, to improve system reliability.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and electronics engineers to create integrated solutions.
  • Support assembly, commissioning, and testing of systems at in-house and customer locations.
  • Act as a technical representative, maintaining close contact with customers throughout development and implementation.
  • Provide comprehensive system documentation and support on-site validation and acceptance testing.
  • Travel occasionally to customer sites in Europe to oversee system installation and commissioning.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Aeronautical, Automotive, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
  • 3-5 years of experience in mechatronic system development.
  • Proficiency in modelling and simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink).
  • Ability to work independently and take a leading role in customer and development projects.
  • Knowledge of system safety regulations, professional requirements management, and Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA).
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and planning skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English; knowledge of Dutch or German is a plus.
  • Openness to occasional travel for customer support and on-site implementation.

This position offers a dynamic and engaging work environment within a high-tech international team. You will have the opportunity to work on exciting engineering challenges, collaborate with experienced professionals, and make a direct impact on the future of motion control and test technology.

Our story

At S[&]T we contribute to a safer life on earth by translating space data into valuable and actionable insights. We oversee data from instruments to application, and apply our expertise within our software frameworks, information products and consultancy.

Our society relies on space and scientific instruments for climate change monitoring, navigation, defence and national security, and other crucial services we all use in our daily lives. These instruments produce an enormous quantity of complex data, and our goal is to unlock its value.

We have more than 20 years of experience working on instrument calibration, the creation of data quality monitoring tools, the development of real-time data processing frameworks, and the development of application-specific algorithms. With this, we help organisations, governments and industries to strengthen their information position and thereby improve their decision making. We focus on the following domains: Space & Science, Defence & Security, Environment & Sustainability, and High-Tech Consulting.
