Want to make your mark on our time? Become an experienced local air quality modeler at TNO in Utrecht!

About this position

Within TNO, innovative combinations of measuring and modelling are developed for air quality monitoring on a local to regional scale. We aim to get a better understanding of when, where, and how air pollution affects our health and which sources are responsible. We see a growing need in society for high-resolution air quality maps to identify hotspots in terms of exposure and provide action perspectives targeting local sources of air pollution. We are looking for an experienced local air quality modeler to play a key role in developing and applying these technologies within our TNO air quality department.

What will be your role?

As an expert, you have insight into the available tools and models inside and outside TNO. You are able to operate these tools and models and know how to interpret and report the results. You are knowledgeable in the field of local air quality modelling inside and outside TNO. Local modelling as a research topic is to be further developed in TNO. We therefore look for a person who both has the expertise and motivation to bring this forward in our air quality modelling group.

Additionally, many opportunities exist to link local air quality modelling to other expertise groups in TNO on mobility, energy, industry, behavior, etc. An open mind for cooperation and innovation is therefore a plus.

What we expect from you

  • You have a degree in environmental sciences, physics, chemistry, or mathematics and, after graduating, you have gained five to seven years' work experience in the field of local air quality modelling e.g. at an engineering firm (e.g. MER, environmental impact reports), company, or research institute.
  • You are familiar with local air quality models in the EU/NL and relevant legislation.
  • You master programming languages like Python and preferably also Fortran.
  • You are familiar with geospatial tools for visualising air quality results.
  • You have a good understanding of processes and algorithms of models and their limitations and have experience in operating these models.
  • You are capable of explaining complex subject matter in straightforward language both verbally and in writing (English and Dutch).
  • You are capable of setting up a strategy and vision for local air quality models in cooperation with our research team and take the responsibility for quality, maintenance, and a development plan.
  • You are capable of providing advice on which modelling strategy to follow in cooperation with various expertise groups and of enthusing others or persuading them of your argument both internally and externally.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 5.750,- and € 7.600,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33%, and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops, and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
