Internship - Data Retrieval for Polymers Using AI

About this position

Innovative technologies are crucial for ensuring a sustainable future for our planet. Despite their exceptional performance in various sectors like packaging, automotive, and textiles, plastics have garnered a negative reputation due to their environmental impact. TNO Circular Plastics is dedicated to addressing the issues associated with fossil-based plastics. To achieve this, TNO employs advanced techniques that bridge material science and artificial intelligence. This internship offers an opportunity to explore cutting-edge solutions.

What will be your role?

This internship project focuses on developing an advanced AI tool to enhance the extraction of information from scientific publications. By utilizing image recognition technology, the project aims to analyze polymer structures depicted in scientific literature. This innovative approach will enable the efficient identification and extraction of valuable data, facilitating the development of new, sustainable polymers. You will work in a passionate team of scientists, utilizing your skills in programming and computer sciences. The aim of this internship is to provide students with a taste of research outside academia.

What we expect from you

Candidates should be currently pursuing a degree in data science, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, with experience in data analysis and machine learning, is essential. Familiarity with AI techniques, particularly in image recognition and data extraction, is crucial. An understanding of polymer structures is a plus. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail, are important.

  • A free membership of Jong TNO, where you can meet other TNO professionals and join several activities, such as sports activities, (work-related) courses or the yearly ski-trip.
  • Use of a laptop.
  • An allowance for travel expenses in case you don’t receive an OV-card.
