Contributing to the energy transmission with unique exploration with S-waves and cold-front modelling for a geothermal project at Kwintsheul, the Netherlands

Job description

The Kwintsheul Geothermie project consists of 2 operational wells. A fault has been identified close to the injection well, making this site particularly suited to study the effects of the fault on the cold front propagation. Microseismic monitoring equipment will be installed in a shallow water well and at the surface. A previous study at this location detected one microseismic event, but its location uncertainty was too large assess the causal relation with the cold front. Hence a seismic survey will be performed to constrain the velocity model and improve event localization.

In the first part of the project, you will be responsible for designing an active-source S-wave acquisition You will also help during the acquisition, and then will process the data to obtain images and velocity information of the subsurface at Kwintsheul. In the second part of the project you will be cooperating with TNO on incorporating the result from the first part in modelling to constrain the cold-front propagation and the influence of the fault in the subsurface.

Job requirements

  • PhD in Applied Geophysics or related
  • Some experience in reflection seismology is required
  • Some experience in earthquake-hypocenter estimation is required
  • Some experience in modelling is a required
