Internship: The potential of AI for learning the structure of Bayesian Belief Networks with limited/missing data

About this position

During military operations, it is important that the commander obtains an understanding of the situation in order to make timely and better decisions than the opponent. Hypothesis testing models are a common method to obtain situational understanding. In TNO, we use Bayesian Belief Networks (BBNs) for hypothesis testing. However, data to learn the structure of a BBN is often limited or missing in military contexts, which significantly reduces the performance of the model. In this internship you will explore whether Artificial Intelligence can aid in determining the structure of a BBN when data is limited or missing.

What will be your role?

The goal of this assignment is to explore the potential of AI for learning the structure of a BBN when available data is limited in size or contains many missing values. You will look into AI techniques that can be used for this purpose by means of a literature study. In this study, you will focus on the following two questions:

  1. Which types of AI techniques exist that can be used to learn the structure of a BBN?
  2. In what way can these algorithms be adapted to work with limited or missing data?

Given the results of the literature study, you will develop one or more potential (adapted) models and test the performance by means of a military use case.

The assignment is part of a multi-disciplinary project and will be performed within TNO’s Intelligence and Decision Support department, which is part of the Unit Defense, Safety and Security. We are a team of +/- 35 professionals who are passionate about applied research that make the Netherlands more safe and secure. We develop innovative solutions in our expertise areas of intelligence and (AI-based) decision support for the Dutch armed forces and national security partners. We're excited to welcome you to our diverse team.
