Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Laboratory Researcher at TNO in Eindhoven!

About this position

As a laboratory researcher in materials science, you work on the formulation, deposition, and testing of novel chemical systems for applications in diverse fields. One topic is on the development of a PFAS-free firefighting foam, where you will investigate the physical/chemical process of firefighting. You will help us understand the complex behavior that results from combining nanomaterials, polymers, and surfactants in a foam. In a separate project, we are developing workover fluids for oil well operations, which are critical for safe and efficient installation of equipment. These fluids enhance well productivity or prolong their lifespan by facilitating the replacement of faulty parts. They also help control downhole pressures while minimizing risks like corrosion, formation damage, and fluid incompatibility. It is essential that workover fluids are stable both at the surface and in downhole conditions, and the overall goal of the project is to develop formulations with appropriate viscosity, density, and chemical properties.

What will be your role?

Typical work activities are:

  • Formulation and testing of functional materials;
  • Building and adapting test and characterization equipment;
  • Materials characterization including spectroscopic (e.g., FTIR, UV/VIS, fluorescent, or dielectric) and microscopic (optical, SEM) techniques, and polymer testing (e.g., DSC, TGA, DMA);
  • Reporting research results in the form of presentations or written project reports.

What we expect from you

This is a hands-on, laboratory-focused role requiring a solid foundation in materials and/or chemical engineering, preferably with experience in fluidic systems and/or polymer formulation. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor or Master’s degree and experience correlating material properties with chemical functionality;
  • Professional industrial experience (1-3 years is a plus);
  • Skills in analytical techniques (e.g., FTIR, Raman, UV/VIS, fluorescence, DSC/TGA) for testing novel formulations;
  • Experience in automated data handling, numerical analysis, and/or programming languages;
  • A strong affinity for hardware integration and developing custom equipment/tooling (experience in rheology is a plus).

We’re looking for a goal-oriented, proactive team player comfortable with practical lab activities, including operating instruments, interpreting data, conducting experiments, and designing setups. Clear and concise communication skills are essential, both oral and written. Proficiency in English is required, especially for presenting and reporting. Dutch language skills are an advantage.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th-month bonus of 8.33%, and a flex budget (5.58% + €180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself. TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops, and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.

  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work part-time (32 or 36 hours), and the possibility of working from home.
  • Access to our Talent Development Programme.
  • Networking opportunities and great activities organized by Jong TNO.
  • A good pension scheme.
