Develop a Graphical User Interface (GUI) in C# which will be used for setup calculations. This simulation tool will assist the development of new products and the fine tuning of the process parameters of our existing product portfolio.

What's your job?

TATA Steel Netherlands is an integrated steel plant, which produces both hot and cold rolled steel strips. The cold rolled strips are often processed further in our hot dip galvanizing lines to achieve the desired corrosion resistant properties by the formation of a thin Zinc layer at the surface of the steel strip.

The temper mill (TM) is a deformation process, where the strip is forced through a set of rolls. The gap between the rolls is slightly smaller than the entry thickness of the strip, resulting in thickness reduction. The strip gets thinner but also longer due to the conservation of mass (strip widening is negligible).

A temper mill has three functions:

  • sufficient plastic (permanent) deformation of the strip to improve its mechanical properties
  • imprint roughness on the strip by textured work rolls (WR)
  • correct strip flatness imperfections. TM is among the final steps of the downstream operations.

Thus, failing to achieve the targeted elongation, roughness, and/or flatness means that the customer requirements are not met. The material might be rejected which has a detrimental environmental and economic impact. In addition, the ever stringent customer requirements push the available process window to the limits to achieve those targets.

The assignment focuses on the temper mill setup model, which calculates the required process parameters to achieve the specified elongation and roughness. The predictive models currently used are obtained by regression, including an adaption factor based on past coils.
