At Damen Workboats, our goal is to develop, design, and construct a portfolio of tugs, dredgers, or workboats effectively and efficiently, primarily based on series production of (smart-customized) standard designs. Damen Workboats offers a range of innovative, standardized & smart-customized designs, fulfilling current and developing market demands, with well-balanced levels of quality, service, price, and delivery time, thereby providing optimal solutions for our clients.

The Role

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be part of an innovative team looking for ways to improve existing designs or create new designs. Your work will help Damen to reduce costs, lead time, and improve quality, or assist our clients with enhanced performance, innovative use, or a more sustainable operation of the vessel. Whether it is an improvement of the layout, implementation of new techniques, or an improved design of the vessel, you can come up with state-of-the-art ideas. Your new design will be created as a building block ready to be integrated into existing ship designs.

Main Activities

  • Supporting the Services department and the Yards in case of problems related to the standard designs.
  • Mechanical standardization and development projects, under the ultimate responsibility of the Project Manager Engineering.
  • Creating a well-supported technical design and solution based on functional and/or stakeholder requirements.
  • Ensuring that the designs and solutions comply with the applicable rules and standards.

Key Accountabilities

  • Executing all engineering phases according to the V-model, from setting up functional requirements to preparing commissioning protocols.
  • Assessing and analyzing input from suppliers, services, detailed engineering, and suppliers.
  • Working closely within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Monitoring quality and organizing interface and system integration with other disciplines and co-makers.
  • Performing basic calculations related to Class, load/power, strength, and flow in the mechanical engineering field.
  • Preparing system diagrams, propulsion arrangements, and outfitting drawings.
  • Preparing Design Philosophies, Measurement, and Commissioning protocols.
  • Outsourcing work to our 3D Engineering partners.

Skills & Experience

As a Mechanical Engineer in the standardization team, you need to have the following:

  • A quality consciousness and a practical approach.
  • You are easy-going, proactive, creative, showing ownership, and result-driven.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably in the field of Mechanical Engineering.
  • Working experience in Mechanical Engineering in the maritime sector.
  • Familiarity with the Rules and Regulations and the ability to interpret and translate them for our ship-type portfolio.
  • An interest in innovation and an open mindset to new technologies.
  • Good communication skills in managing stakeholders and documenting the standard.
  • English is a must; Dutch is a plus.
