Develop a Energy Market Modelling for the Green Steel Transition!

What are you going to do?

Tata Steel Nederland, and in general the steel industry, is at a critical juncture as it attempts to significantly reduce its carbon emissions. The industry has traditionally relied heavily on coal, with work-arising gases from various processes being reused for other steel production processes and electricity generation. This reliance on coal makes traditional steel making self-sufficient, with little exposure to the market. However, to meet the ambitious targets of reducing carbon emissions by 35%-40% by 2030 and achieving zero emissions by 2045, there is an urgent need to transition to carbon-free fuels and electricity from renewable sources. This transition requires a substantial renovation of the energy supply and demand infrastructure, introducing new complexities and uncertainties in energy provision and operational expenditures due to the volatility of renewable energy sources.

The aim of this study is to develop a simplified yet concrete model of the energy market that can be implemented and deployed within a short timeframe. This model will build upon an existing Python-based framework designed for studying hydrogen production and storage, and will be further developed for a specific application in the energy management of Tata Steel Nederland. The model will assist Tata Steel in exploring various scenarios and possible flexibility options for transitioning to sustainable energy sources while addressing the challenges posed by current and future energy infrastructure and their uncertainties.

Do you recognise yourself?

The assignment is designed for a graduation project of 6-9 months, for students with a background in energy technology and energy economics. Background knowledge in model development, programming in Python, and optimization techniques is a plus.

What do we offer you?

  • An internship allowance of €550,- gross per month.
  • A challenging and instructive internship with good supervision.
  • Together with you, a clear assignment will be designed in advance, such that it meets the requirements of your college/university.
  • You can gain valuable experience within a large organisation and the Netherlands' only steel manufacturing industry.
  • You can count on a no-nonsense and result-oriented organisation, in which you can make a concrete contribution to the realisation of improvement objectives.
  • We offer the possibility to make use of our library services.
  • You can sign up for 'Interns For Steel'. This is a group set up for all interns in Tata Steel. They organise regular tours, lunch together once a week and there is a monthly get together.

What is your department?

You will work with a multidisciplinary team of about 20 researchers at the Thermal Processes research group at Tata Steel R&D. Your work will consist of data collection, model development, and communicating your results with stakeholders. Interacting with colleagues from diverse backgrounds you will develop an energy market model to analyse different scenarios for the future configuration of Tata Steel.

Our ambition

Our ambition is to become a green, clean, and circular steel company that everyone is proud of. We aim to improve how people around the world work, live and move through sustainable steel. To succeed, we need talents like you. Will you join us in shaping the future?
