As a Barclays Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for working with Product Owners, Developers, and other parties to deliver the technical implementations to fulfil the Smart Investor Product Vision. You will be joining a high performing team in the Wealth Technology business area and working closely with business product owners, partners in Infrastructure and with Third Party vendors. In addition, you will provide inspirational leadership to the junior members of the team supporting their development into world class engineers.

Barclays is one of the world's largest and most respected financial institutions, established in 1690, with a legacy of success, quality, and innovation. We offer careers that provide endless opportunity – helping millions of individuals and businesses thrive and creating financial and digital solutions that the world now takes for granted.

At Barclays, we offer a hybrid working experience that blends the positives of working alongside colleagues at our onsite locations, together with working from home. We have a structured approach where colleagues work at an onsite location on fixed, ‘anchor’, days of the week, for a minimum of two days a week or more, as set by the business area (or nearest equivalent if working part-time hours). Please discuss the working pattern requirements for the role you are applying for with the hiring manager. Please note that as we continue to embed our hybrid working environment, we remain in a test and learn phase, which means that working arrangements may be subject to change on reasonable notice to ensure we meet the needs of our business.

What will you be doing?

Collaborating with other senior engineers to drive platform architecture, coding standards and streamline ways of working. Act as a mentor to the wider development team

Designing and implementing clean code solutions to business problems, testing through unit, integration, acceptance, and regression

Identifying technical change requirements in collaboration with the agile squad to propose solutions for agile stories

Identifying high level requirements and then drive out /derive detail of the lower-level requirements via applicable methods (stakeholder engagement, workshops, data analysis)

Providing stakeholders and other colleagues with clear and accurate information on current and future system processes and architecture

Undertaking diagnostic work to understand specific business issues or problems in greater depth and reveal possible solutions

Participating actively as an agile squad member to move tasks forward, support colleagues with impediments and ensure that we generate value for our customers and the business

What we’re looking for:

Knowledge of Java JDK 17+ and REST (Open Api)

Familiarity with Unit, Integration and Acceptance Testing and associated libraries

Knowledge of TDD software development practices

Technical Leadership – experience leading or mentoring a small team of developers

Skills that will help you in the role:

Cloud Platform experience with AWS or Open shift

JS and or TS experience utilising React and/or Angular

Familiarity with Gradle (ideally within a Kotlin DSL), Docker

CI/CD automation experience (BitBucket, Jenkins, SonarQube, Nexus Repo)

Where will you be working?
Our new state-of-the-art Campus, right in the heart of Glasgow is a hub of creative collaboration. A place where everyone can bring their true selves to work and reach their full potential. Home to 5,000 of our colleagues, our Tradeston campus will support the community in more ways than one - by creating thousands of new career opportunities and celebrating local artists. A short walk from Central Station on the south of the Clyde, it will be a key location for the Barclays business that will deepen our ties with the city and its communities.
