Dyson is a global technology enterprise. We solve the problems others choose to ignore, with surprising new inventions that defy convention and simply work better. We’re driven by progress and thrive on the challenge of relentless improvement. We’re growing fast and our ambition is huge – more categories, more locations and more people.

Our scale and rapid growth make Dyson rich in new opportunities. We value new ideas and diverse perspectives, so our people are trusted with real work and responsibility from the outset. You’ll develop fast and have the chance to move into different business areas and regions. And you’ll be part of a global network of like-minded people – a community that supports and learns from each other.

Power Systems is a global function that designs and develops Dyson’s internal technologies that enable most of our products. The team has experts in wide range of areas (mechanical, electrical, software, project management) and is responsible of the development from early stages through to production.

Engineering Analysis team within Power Systems is responsible for the performance, simulation, analysis, and experimental verification of the technology project. The team consists of experts in fields of turbomachinery, thermodynamics, acoustics, vibrations, rotor dynamics, fluid dynamics, structural analysis, and data analysis. Utilizing the state-of-the-art advanced analysis methods to ensure the design is optimized and robust for maximum performance.

About the role

We are looking for an Engineering Analysis Intern to work within our Engineering Analysis function inside Power Systems, to apply her/his skills and experience in Fluid Dynamics/Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and/or Structural Dynamics/Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to deliver our next generation Dyson internally developed technologies and their product integration. He/she will also use analytical techniques to add insight into experimental results, driving early development concepts, supporting projects with appropriate technology readiness and advancement. In addition, the candidate will be expected to continually improve and develop new techniques and methodologies, to build the capability of Power Systems group and Dyson as a whole. Some of your tasks could include:

  • Generate innovative concepts for new technologies using analytical techniques including CFD/FEA and experiments.

  • Responsible for activities such as thermal management, aerodynamic/acoustic performance, structural robustness, rotor dynamics of the technology through design, development, and delivery.

  • Responsible to develop air paths and cooling options for mechanical, electrical and electronic components of the technology system to achieve robustness and high performance.

  • Responsible for supporting implementation of design concepts from component design through to finished assembly. This would include analysis, product concepts, dimensional verification, and general demonstration of the use of core engineering disciplines.

  • Responsible for leading the development of design concepts through prototype hardware procurement, assembly, testing, data analysis, fault analysis, problem solving, and design refinement. This may require some direction of technical support personnel.

  • Considers and seeks out the impact of his/her actions within the team. Actively seeks collaboration with internal and external team members

  • Ability and engagement in transferring experience and training to design engineers and junior specialists – best-practices establishing and sharing.

  • Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned. Deliver product focused technology projects to the Dyson range plan.

About you

Our internship roles are competitive and delivering the next generation of Dyson technology is tough, so you will need to be:

  • Working towards or have achieved a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering or equivalent (other relevant engineering disciplines will be considered)

  • Fundamental knowledge in one or more of the areas: structural dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, strength of materials, vibro- or aero- acoustics

  • Demonstrated ability to investigate, model and provide critical insights into complex physical phenomena such as aerodynamic performance, noise, vibration, vibro-acoustics, aero-acoustics, or thermal management.

  • Ability to perform thermodynamic heat transfer calculations and proficient in the theory of thermodynamics, aerodynamics, and fluid dynamics.

  • Experience in using simulation analysis software such as ANSYS, Nastran, Abaqus would be advantageous

  • Good understanding of experimental techniques, particularly about pressure, temperature, strain, and flow measurement.

  • Interest in understanding of rotating machinery design.

  • The proven ability to work as part of a team or un-supervised to an agreed goal or set

  • of deliverables is imperative.

  • A clear logical thinker with exceptional attention to detail.

  • A proven structured approach to creative problem solving.

  • Ability to communicate appropriate, concise, and accurate information in written and verbal format.

For your application to be considered, please upload 1) your detailed resume and 2) transcript (all semesters inclusive) in a single file together with your online application.
