TATA steel IJmuiden produces boron manganese steel grades. During the production of these steel grades, one of the issues is the formation of non metallic inclusions which can lead to clogging of the Submerged Entry Nozzle (SEN) during casting. From the customer end, large inclusions are detrimental for the product performance. To overcome this issue, it is crucial to find an index for the inclusion formation, using the available data. Optical Emission Spectrometry with Pulse Discrimination Analysis (OES-PDA) is a characterization method used for the quantitative determination of major elements in the steel. With OES-PDA it is also possible to determine the concentration of various oxides/sulphides inclusions.
A set of OES-PDA data is available for these steel grades. You as an intern will asses the raw data to find an indication for the inclusion formation based on the differences between "good" and "bad" batches. The difference in the set of data has a relation to clogging and customer complains. In case an index is found, it can be implemend as an online tool to monitor the inclusion formation at the steel plant.
The project will be conducted within Research and Development (R&D) Steelmaking & Casting Department of Tata Steel IJmuiden with great opportunities for networking and being closely involved in the future developments.
