We are recruiting for several Research Analyst positions for now and in the near future within the Directorates General Economics, International & European Relations, Macroprudential Policy and Financial Stability, Monetary Policy, or Research.

These teams provide input into the economic, monetary and financial analyses that are the building blocks of the ECB’s policy decisions.

In your role as a Research Analyst, you will support and contribute to monitoring, analysing and forecasting economic and financial developments in the euro area, euro area countries, or in major advanced and emerging market economies outside the euro area. You will work closely with analysts and experts in the field.

Your role

  • address data and information requests and develop thorough and consistent interpretations of data under the guidance and supervision of experts;
  • provide relevant input for analysis by collecting and managing data, including large datasets and unstructured data using machine learning and deep learning techniques, and maintain data infrastructures;
  • provide econometric support for economic and financial analyses, including research projects, and develop dedicated analytical tools;
  • contribute to the ECB’s official publications and help prepare data-driven presentations to address policy questions;
  • use data- and model-based evidence to contribute to notes, briefings and memos to support ECB policy positions.

We actively support professional development for our staff. Besides learning opportunities such as training and mentoring, we encourage and support horizontal mobility after some years in the same position.

These positions offer excellent opportunities to join dynamic and experienced teams and to cooperate closely with analysts and experts across the institution. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential

  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in economics, finance, econometrics, data science, mathematics, political science or another relevant field;
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of two years’ practical experience, for instance gained from internships, work placements, traineeships or as a research assistant, including at least 12 months’ practical experience in the fields of economic analysis and policy in a central bank, a comparable international policy institution or in a research institution by the closing date for applications;
  • advanced experience working with programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, R or Stata;
  • experience in developing economic, financial and/or econometric models;
  • sound knowledge of data management techniques;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU.

Desired

  • a master’s degree in economics, finance, econometrics, data science, mathematics, political science or another relevant field;
  • an understanding of machine learning and/or deep learning techniques in the context of economic and financial analysis.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.

You are aware of your strengths and areas for development and know what motivates you to perform at your highest level.

Working modalities

We would be happy to discuss part-time arrangements for these roles. Some of the contracts will be for a 50% part-time arrangement, ideal for candidates pursuing a PhD or other studies while working as a Research Analyst.

Further information

Some of the contracts will be convertible into permanent contracts after three years subject to individual performance and organisational needs.

Temporary appointments may be extended or made permanent subject to organisational needs and budgetary constraints. This may result in a staff member with a non-convertible fixed-term contract being offered a convertible contract in accordance with the ECB Conditions of Employment.
