In an increasingly data-driven organisation, robust governance and effective management of data risks are vital to safeguarding the integrity, availability, and responsible use of information throughout the company. As we continue to advance our data capabilities, we are seeking an experienced and proactive data risk management specialist who can seamlessly connect business, data management, and risk oversight functions. In this role, you will work closely with the Chief Data Owner, data domains, business units, risk specialists, and senior leadership to uphold a strong control environment, ensure compliance with both internal and regulatory standards, and support informed, risk-aware decision-making across the organisation.

Your job

The Senior Data Risk Specialist / Expert is responsible for independent oversight, challenge and monitoring of Data Reporting Risk, with a specific focus on BCBS 239 compliance for Tier 1 and Tier 2 Risk & Finance reports. The role supports the Data Risk Risk Type Owner (RTO) by strengthening the data reporting risk framework, risk monitoring and senior management reporting, and by ensuring that data risks are sustainably managed in business-as-usual. The role requires the application of senior risk-management judgement to assess the impact of data quality, governance and reporting deficiencies on the bank’s risk profile and decision-making.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide Second Line oversight on Data Reporting Risk and BCBS 239 compliance.
  • Contribute to ownership, interpretation and continuous improvement of the Data Risk Policy and related standards.
  • Define, monitor and interpret Data Risk Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) related to reporting, Critical Data Elements and controls.
  • Independently challenge the First Line, Data Domains and report owners on risk identification, mitigation and sustainability.
  • Assess and interpret the impact of data quality, lineage and governance weaknesses on aggregated risk reporting and risk appetite.
  • Apply expert risk judgement to distinguish structural Data Risk issues from isolated data defects and steer appropriate escalation.
  • Prepare and present Data Reporting Risk insights and themes to relevant governance committees.
  • Act as senior sparring partner for stakeholders in Risk, Finance, Data domains, business, IT and Audit.

Key stakeholders

  • Data Risk Risk Type Owner (RTO)
  • Non-Financial Risk Management teams
  • First Line Risk, Finance and Business stakeholders
  • Chief Data Office and Data Domains
  • Internal Audit and Independent Validation functions
  • Regulators and supervisory authorities (e.g. ECB/JST)

Working environment

At ABN AMRO, Non-Financial Risk Management operates as the Second Line of Defence, responsible for establishing risk frameworks, providing independent challenge, and monitoring whether risks are managed within the approved appetite. Data Risk is a significant non-financial risk type, attracting increased supervisory scrutiny due to its impact on risk data aggregation, reporting reliability, and regulatory compliance—particularly with respect to BCBS 239 requirements. Within the Non-Financial Risk (NFR) department, the Senior Data Risk Expert plays a critical role in protecting the organisation’s data landscape.

Joining our team means contributing to the development of a resilient, transparent, and future-proof data foundation—one that fosters innovation whilst ensuring the organisation remains safe, compliant, and trusted.

Your profile

The role requires strong professional judgement, independence and integrity. The Senior Data Risk Specialist acts as a constructive challenger, balancing cooperation with the First Line while safeguarding Second Line independence. The role contributes to a strong risk culture by promoting transparency, learning from issues and audit findings, and by encouraging sustainable risk ownership in the First Line.

Required experience & skills

  • 8–12+ years of experience in Risk Management, Data Risk, Risk Reporting or Regulatory domains.
  • Proven experience in a Second Line of Defence role.
  • Strong knowledge of BCBS 239, data quality, lineage and reporting controls.
  • Experience interacting with audit functions and supervisory authorities.
  • Strong analytical, communication and stakeholder management skills.

Education

Master’s in Finance, Economics, Risk Management, or Data/Information Management. Relevant professional risk or finance certifications (e.g. FRM, PRM, CFA) are an advantage, as they provide expertise in risk frameworks, risk aggregation, governance and interpretation of financial and risk data.

We are offering

  • An attractive gross monthly salary based on a 36hour work week, including holiday allowance and a flexible benefit budget.
  • An excellent pension scheme, ensuring that you are well prepared for the future.
  • Flexibility in working: working from home is possible in consultation with your team and depending on your role. We will provide an ergonomic home office setup for you.
  • Plenty of room for relaxation with five weeks of vacation per year, supplemented by two mandatory days off. You can also purchase up to four additional weeks of vacation annually.
  • Five “Banking for better days”: extra days off that you can use for personal development or volunteer work.
  • Personal development is key: you receive a development budget of €1,000 per year, which can accumulate up to €3,000.
  • An annual public transport pass with free public transportation throughout the Netherlands for both business and private use.
