KCW Kenniscentrum Willem de Kooning Academie

Drive the future of performative art and sound research as a Research Professor, exploring how listening shapes culture, society, and our ways of being—while building impactful collaborations and advancing a dynamic academic environment.

Research Centre Willem de Kooning Academy (KCW)

KCW is affiliated with the Willem de Kooning Academy and its educational programmes. For the coming years, KCW will concentrate on degrowth through art and design and intersectionality in relation to creative practices. Degrowth is an experimental paradigm for developing ecologically viable artistic and design practices. Intersectionality grapples with the increasingly complex overlaps between cultural, social and political formations and identities shaping our contemporary world. Together degrowth and intersectionality invite experimentation through sustainable pedagogies, artistic research, and cultural work; they support emerging, underrecognized, and collective research and practices.

These research areas give structure and coherence to the research trajectories:

  1. Design Research on Sustainable Materials and Technologies;
  2. Performative Art Research, Sound, and Society;
  3. Artistic Research and Emerging Forms of Cultural Production.

For the research thematic Performative Art Research, Sound and Society we are looking for a research professor (lector). This research line investigates how sound and listening actively produce cultural meaning, social relations, and ways of being in the world.

What will you be doing?

The lector will enhance the educational and research priorities of the Willem de Kooning Academy, collaborate with key research and education staff across the various research domains within RUAS, and be the catalyst for forging partnership/consortiums with (inter)national organizations. The successful candidate will join Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool Rotterdam) at a key moment in its transition towards becoming a Knowledge Institute to strengthen its learning and research environment.

A strong research profile is necessary. Reporting to the director of the Research Centre, the post-holder will seek to make a difference to the field of artistic research and scholarly activity, fundraising, and the delivery of excellence in teaching and learning.

Are you the one we’re looking for?

The research professor meets the following requirements:

  • Has a clear vision on the research line and can provide demonstrable theoretical and practical knowledge in this field;
  • Has a PhD in the field of artistic research, in particular sound studies;
  • Has work experience in the professional field;
  • Has recently published on relevant platforms;
  • Has demonstrable affinity with higher education and can translate results from research and apply this in educational programmes;
  • Has a relevant (international) network and inspires teachers, students, professionals and others;
  • Has good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Has excellent English language proficiency and mastery of the Dutch language, or willingness to learn.

What do we offer?

Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool Rotterdam) offers a temporary contract of 6 years for 0,8 FTE. The salary range is HBO-CAO grade 15 (EUR 7,357.11 minimum and EUR 9,544.16 maximum gross per month for fulltime employment), exclusive of 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Fringe benefits include an attractive pension scheme and good secondary employment conditions.

Closing date: 19 April 2026
