This graduation assignment, Integrating AI into Mechanical Engineering Processes, focuses on researching, selecting, and prototyping AI applications that can improve mechanical engineering workflows within Vanderlande.

Description of Assignment

Research current AI technologies relevant to mechanical engineering. Identify engineering processes within the department that could benefit from AI integration. Evaluate feasibility and potential impact of AI use cases. Prototype one or more AI-based solutions (e.g., using Python, MATLAB, or low-code platforms). Document findings and present recommendations to the team.

Scope of Work

Phase 1: Orientation & Research

  • Understand the department’s workflows
  • Conduct a literature and market review of AI applications in mechanical engineering
  • Interview engineers to identify pain points and opportunities

Phase 2: Use Case Selection

Select 2–3 promising AI use cases (e.g., design optimization, anomaly detection, document classification).

Phase 3: Prototyping

  • Develop a proof-of-concept for one selected use case
  • Use available tools (e.g., Python, TensorFlow, OpenAI API, Power Automate, etc.)
  • Test the prototype with real or simulated data

Phase 4: Evaluation & Reporting

  • Assess the performance and usability of the prototype
  • Provide recommendations for further development or implementation
  • Present findings to the engineering team and management

Department Description

As part of our continuous improvement efforts, we are exploring how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support and optimize engineering processes from sales design to delivery up and to service. Our department is responsible for translating the as sold sales design to a completely engineered baggage handling system, taking into account increasing customer demands. With systems getting larger and more complex, generating the necessary output for project execution is getting more and more complex. This internship aims to identify, evaluate, and prototype AI applications that can bring measurable value to our engineering department.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Research report on AI in engineering
  • Use case analysis and selection rationale
  • Working prototype (code or workflow)
  • Final presentation and internship report

Your Profile

  • Basic programming knowledge (Python preferred)
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving
  • Interest in AI and (mechanical) engineering innovation
  • Communication and documentation skills
  • Mandatory enrolment to a Dutch Education System & resident of The Netherlands

Vanderlande is the global market leader for value-added logistic process automation at airports, and in the parcel market. Vanderlande’s baggage handling systems move 4.2 billion pieces of luggage around the world per year. Its systems are active in 600 airports including 14 of the world’s top 20.
