This internship focuses on integrating digital surveying methods (survey points and point clouds) into mechanical engineering installation processes within the Airports department.

Description of Assignment

The current installation process is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and in some situations not accurate enough. It is also not designed for the future, where multidisciplinary collaboration with multiple stakeholders is expected. Today, installation layouts are created manually using individual dimensions based on the start and end points of conveyors. This method becomes inefficient and unreliable when buildings are not straight or contain curved geometries. As a result, producing these layouts takes a lot of time and can lead to inaccuracies.

New technologies such as the use of survey points or print robots offer opportunities to modernize the process. However, these methods are not yet part of our standard workflow, meaning engineers must individually negotiate when deviations from the current process are needed.

The key question is: How can a data-driven installation process, based on digital surveying methods such as survey points and point clouds, be developed and standardized so it can effectively replace the current manual workflow within the Airports department?

Department Description

Our department plays a key role in translating sales designs into fully engineered baggage handling systems for airports worldwide. We are responsible for ensuring that designs are feasible, efficient, and ready for installation in increasingly complex environments. As buildings and systems grow in scale and complexity, traditional engineering and installation methods are no longer sufficient.

Within this context, we are working towards a future-proof installation process that enables better alignment between engineering, stakeholders, and execution on site. This internship contributes directly to these efforts by helping to define and standardize a smarter, data-driven workflow for the Airports department.
