How NS Trainee Lisa Ye Brings People and Technology Together

Reading time: 5 minutes

Are you tech savvy and do you want to make a difference in society? At NS, you can. We sat down with Lisa Ye to ask her about her traineeship, her personal and professional development, and the plans she has for the future. A story about grabbing opportunities, learning on the go, and figuring out your path after graduation.

From TU Delft to NS: How Lisa found her passion for mobility

During her master’s in Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft, Lisa got fascinated by mobility and innovation. A technical traineeship at NS was a perfect fit for her. Lisa explains: “NS is the biggest name in mobility in the Netherlands, and genuinely cares about society. That’s important to me. During my internship at consultancy firm Berenschot, I already realized I want to make a real impact. At NS I get that opportunity.”

Lisa is in the first year of her two-year traineeship and works in the Human-Machine Interaction (MMI) team. Her focus? Conducting research into the effect of technical design choices on how operators perform their work. “I am currently participating in the preparation of research to see whether we can investigate design choices in the current train and alternatives in the train simulator.”

Why Lisa chose a traineeship over a regular job

When asked why she picked a traineeship, Lisa doesn’t hesitate a moment. “The NS traineeship was exactly what I was looking for—it matches my interests and offers me the opportunity to grow as a professional and as a human. It’s also a great way to build work experience, because even for entry-level jobs in product design, companies expect you to have an impressive resume. A traineeship is a perfect stepping stone to get there.”

“The best part of my work? Connecting people and technology.”

For Lisa NS offers more than just work experience. “They are truly invested in your personal growth. Every time I think I’ve seen it all, something new comes up. NS values my input, even though I’m a trainee. My colleagues take the time to listen and guide me, so I’m never left figuring things out on my own.”

For Lisa, the ultimate reward is bridging the gap between people and technology. “My goal is to combine mobility and innovation with making a difference in society. The NS traineeship helps me explore the direction I want to take. It’s setting me up for a solid future career and internal growth within NS.”

Focus on professional and personal growth

The traineeship isn’t just shaping Lisa’s professional future—it’s also helping her grow on a personal level. “My job at NS made me more confident. My team members offer great support and every milestone is celebrated! That certainly keeps me motivated to deliver.”

With a variety of projects under her belt, Lisa has also gained more insight into her growth opportunities. “You really learn what you’re good at and how you can further develop yourself. At NOS you’re also connecting with people outside your own bubble.”

Lisa’s advice to ambitious graduates

“As long as you’re curious and open-minded, you’ll get there,” says Lisa. “A traineeship is a great investment in yourself and your future. It helps you lay a solid foundation for your career, figure out what you enjoy, and discover what you’re good at. And in a dynamic industry like mobility, you’ll get to know different roles and environments.”
