Safe mooring of large container ships has become increasingly more challenging. Do you want to make an impact in your internship and increase safe mooring? Discover the Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF) and its impact on mooring line forces for large container ships. Dive into research on ship behavior under diverse conditions, from wind speeds to mooring setups. If you're passionate about maritime engineering, join us!
Safe mooring for large container ships (300m or longer, over 9,000 TEU) is becoming more difficult. These ships have a big side wind area, and their high mooring deck levels mean short, steep lines are often unavoidable. This can lead to unsafe mooring situations with high line tensions, risking winch slippage, line snapping, or bollard overloading. As consultants for port authorities and terminal operators, Royal HaskoningDHV studies mooring setups and ship behavior to find ways to make mooring safer. Despite this, some companies still rely on static mooring analysis, which could lead to more unsafe situations as container ships continue to grow in size.
This internship focuses on analyzing the Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF), which compares maximum mooring line forces between static and dynamic analyses for large container ships. We'll explore how DAF varies based on factors like ship size, wind conditions, mooring setup, and other parameters, including container stacks and cranes' impact on wind forces.
Royal HaskoningDHV is a worldwide independent engineering, project management and consultancy firm which integrates 140 years of engineering expertise with digital technologies and software solutions. Our 6,000 colleagues are working from offices in more than 25 countries across the world.
