Introduction

The Pipeline Team within ASML’s Development Environment department supports thousands of software developers by providing reliable workflows, automation, and development tooling. The team maintains software validation, build automation, and deployment solutions used across a large internal development community. As software systems become increasingly distributed, validating integrations between services in a reliable and scalable way is a growing challenge. During this internship, you will help explore an innovative approach to contract testing by combining live-system validation with observability data. Your work will contribute to improving software reliability and testing automation at scale.

Computer Science | Software Engineering (thesis) internship: observability-driven synthetic contract testing

In a nutshell

  • Location: Eindhoven, Netherlands
  • Team: Interns and Trainees
  • Work experience: 0-1 year
  • Educational background: Computer Science, Other technical backgrounds
  • Travel: No
  • Programming languages: Python
  • Workplace type: Hybrid
  • Fulltime/parttime: Full time

Your assignment

During this internship, you will investigate, design, and implement a platform for synthetic contract testing against live systems. Rather than relying solely on traditional test environments, the solution will continuously validate service interactions in real running environments using functional responses and observability data. You will collaborate with software development and reliability-focused teams to evaluate technical approaches, create prototypes, and deliver a scalable solution.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Gather requirements from software development and platform engineering stakeholders.
  • Investigate existing contract testing, monitoring, and observability solutions.
  • Evaluate and prototype alternative technical approaches.
  • Develop and implement contract validation capabilities for live services.
  • Integrate observability data, including traces and metrics, into the solution.
  • Design mechanisms for behavioral baseline creation and contract drift detection.
  • Create dashboards, documentation, and recommendations for future improvements.

This is a master's thesis internship for minimum 5 months, minimum 4 days per week (2-3 days on-site). The start date of this internship is as of February 2027.

During this internship, you will gain hands-on experience with cloud-native software development, modern observability practices, distributed systems, and large-scale enterprise software platforms. You will have the opportunity to contribute to a topic that combines software engineering, system reliability, and innovation.

Your profile

To be suitable for the internship, you:

  • Are pursuing a master's degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a related field.
  • Have practical experience with Python and software development through academic, project, or personal work.
  • Have experience working with GitHub or similar version control platforms.
  • Have an interest in cloud-native technologies, distributed systems, and software reliability.
  • Are proactive, self-starting, and comfortable working independently while collaborating with others.
  • Have strong communication skills and are fluent in English, both spoken and written.
  • Have a curiosity for learning new technologies and exploring innovative solutions.

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship, and you are at least 18 years old at the start of the internship;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement);
