About this position

Within TNO's Networks department, our researchers develop innovations for the digital infrastructure of tomorrow. This includes new generations of mobile networks, immersive technologies and cloud infrastructures for applications in areas such as media, automotive and defence. The department has a strong international profile and is represented in relevant standardisation bodies, including IETF, MPEG and 3GPP.

As a Senior Patent Expert, you focus on knowledge-intensive patent matters within the technological areas in which Networks operates, with particular emphasis on wireless, mobile and softwarized networks. You combine in-depth technical knowledge with expertise in intellectual property, making you the technical link between researchers, patent attorneys, lawyers and clients.

You will work in an experienced team of around 70 colleagues and be exposed to a wide variety of new technologies across the department.

  • Location: The Hague
  • Work arrangement: On-site
  • Education level: Master
  • Hours per week: 32-40 hours/week

What will be your role?

As a Senior Patent Expert, you will work closely with researchers within Networks and with patent attorneys and lawyers both within and outside TNO. You provide the technical expertise required for a range of intellectual property activities.

You dive deep into complex technologies and translate your analysis into technical input for activities such as preparing claim charts, handling examiner reports and office actions, and responding to oppositions. You do this in close collaboration with patent attorneys and other IP specialists.

Your technical analysis can also play a crucial role in licensing negotiations and matters involving potential patent infringement and court proceedings. For one or more clients, you act as the primary technical point of contact for a portfolio of patents.

Your work therefore puts you at the intersection of technology, intellectual property and client challenges. International business travel may be part of your role.

What we expect from you

You enjoy getting to the bottom of complex technical subjects. You are able to understand both the broader technological context and the smallest technical details. You take a fact-based and analytical approach and use your insights to contribute to the success of our clients.

You bring:

  • An academic-level technical background in ICT, for example in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or another degree with a strong IT component.
  • Demonstrable affinity with wireless, mobile and softwarized network technologies.
  • Demonstrable interest in and experience with patent-related activities.
  • The ability to analyse complex subjects in depth while maintaining an overview of the broader context.
  • A collaborative mindset. You work effectively with professionals from different backgrounds, including researchers and IP specialists.
  • Strong communication skills and an excellent command of English, both spoken and written.
  • A strong customer focus.
  • Willingness to travel internationally for business.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 6443,- and € 9204,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave plus a flexible holiday that can be used on a cultural, religious, or otherwise important day of your choosing (on a full-time basis).
  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 or 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • A good pension scheme.

A certificate of Conduct (VOG) is required before starting a new job at TNO.

Innovation with purpose: that is what TNO stands for. We develop knowledge not for its own sake, but for practical application. TNO connects people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the competitive strength of industry and the well-being of society in a sustainable way.
