The energy transition requires more than renewable generation. Large-scale energy storage is essential to balance supply and demand, support the electricity grid and use renewable energy more effectively.

Eneco develops and realizes utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System projects across Europe. As a BESS Engineering Expert, you contribute directly to these projects and help translate battery technology into safe, reliable and practical engineering solutions.

• Shape the engineering of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems across the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
• Apply your BESS expertise throughout the full project lifecycle, from concept and tendering to construction, commissioning and operation.

Your work is technically challenging and has a visible impact. You collaborate with specialists in electrical engineering, civil engineering, controls, fire safety, operations and asset management. You also have room to grow, share knowledge and help Eneco further develop its BESS engineering standards.

What you’ll do

As a BESS Engineering Expert, you are the technical specialist for battery energy storage within multidisciplinary project teams. You focus on the applied engineering of utility-scale BESS installations and determine what the selected technology means for the wider project design.

You make sure the battery system connects effectively with the electrical infrastructure, control systems, civil design, fire-safety measures and operational requirements. You translate technical knowledge into clear requirements, design documents, standards, contracts and practical advice for the project team.

Your involvement covers the full lifecycle of a BESS project. During the concept phase, you help define the technical solution. During tendering and contracting, you assess supplier proposals and technical documentation. During construction and commissioning, you help verify that the installation performs as intended. You may also advise Asset Management on operational data, performance analyses, reporting and opportunities to improve existing assets.

Your main focus is the expert role within the project team. Depending on your experience and the project, you may also coordinate engineering activities across several disciplines.

You can move between technical detail and the bigger project picture. You work well with engineers, suppliers, contractors and operational teams, and you communicate complex subjects in a clear and practical way.

Furthermore, you bring:

• A master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering or a comparable technical discipline.
• At least three years of relevant experience with utility-scale BESS, power systems or complex energy infrastructure.
• Experience in an engineering, consultancy, supplier, contractor or project delivery environment.
• Knowledge of BESS functionality, performance, safety requirements and technical interfaces.
• The ability to review specifications, designs, supplier documentation and technical proposals.
• Professional proficiency in English. Dutch is a strong advantage, or you are willing to learn it.
• A collaborative and structured way of working, combined with the confidence to take ownership of technical topics.

Experience with MV or HV systems, grid compliance, SCADA, controls, fire safety, commissioning or the operation of BESS assets is an advantage.

You do not need to meet every requirement. We encourage you to apply when you have relevant large-scale energy or infrastructure experience and are motivated to further develop your BESS expertise.

You’ll be responsible for

• Defining technical concepts, requirements and engineering deliverables for utility-scale BESS projects.
• Translating BESS functionality into electrical, civil, controls, fire-safety and operational requirements.
• Reviewing technical solutions, supplier proposals, designs and contract documentation during tendering and execution.
• Supporting investment decisions with technical assessments, cost inputs, risk analyses and advice.
• Managing technical interfaces between the BESS, grid connection, control systems and other project disciplines.
• Supporting construction, commissioning, performance testing and technical acceptance.
• Advising project and operational teams on performance, reporting, warranties, system limitations and improvement opportunities.

This is where you’ll work

You will join Eneco’s Large Projects organization, which develops and realizes renewable energy projects across Europe. Projects move from early development and engineering through contracting, construction and commissioning before they are transferred to the operational organization.

You will work in a growing BESS environment with colleagues from different engineering disciplines, project management, procurement, Asset Management and operations. Within the BESS expert group, colleagues share knowledge and support one another across projects.

The team works with leading BESS technology suppliers, engineering firms and contractors. Together, you develop engineering solutions that are safe, practical and suitable for large-scale application within the European energy system.

At Eneco, we work in a hybrid way. You will have a flexible workspace at our headquarters in Rotterdam, close to Rotterdam Alexander station. Depending on the project phase, you will also work from home, partner locations or project sites.

What we have to offer

Gross annual salary between €81.000 and €114.000
