Job description
Challenge:
Understanding the climatic drivers of crop failure, monitoring crop growth and implementing early warning systems are essential to ensure future food security. Satellite remote sensing, and satellite-derived products provide continuous, global data on crop growth and status. However, these data are still not exploited to their full potential. The CROPWAVES project aims to contribute to better future food security by improving global-scale crop and climate models through the integration of satellite data.

The CROPWAVES project will exploit satellite-based products for soil moisture and vegetation using data assimilation to improve global-scale crop and climate models at different resolutions.
Impact:
CROPWAVES will contribute to improved future food security by providing tools and insight to assess agricultural systems under pressure due to climate change and growing population.
What you’ll do:
Within this international project, TU Delft will develop a machine learning-based forward operator to enable the assimilation of SAR imagery into the crop growth model.
You will:
- Process SAR imagery over several study domains across Europe.
- Prepare satellite data, derived products, crop model output and ancillary data to use as input and output for the proposed forward operator.
- Develop and implement a framework to train, test and validate a machine learning-based forward operator to enable the assimilation of SAR data into a crop growth model.
- Be responsible for the curation, storage and maintenance of data and software used and developed in the project.
- Contribute to reporting and project management, including participation in project meetings.
- Publish your research results in peer-reviewed publications.
- Present your research outputs in project meetings, workshops, and international conferences.
Where, how and with whom you will work:
You will join the Department of Geoscience and Remote Sensing at TU Delft (Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences) and work closely with Prof. Susan Steele-Dunne, her team at TU Delft (m-wave.tudelft.nl) and collaborators in the CROPWAVES project.
Job requirements
For this postdoctoral role, we are looking for someone with a demonstrated background in SAR processing, SAR applications in agriculture and machine learning:
- A PhD in Earth Observation, Geodesy or a closely-related field.
- Demonstrated experience with SAR image processing using SNAP, PolSARPro or similar.
- Experience in the use of SAR for agricultural applications.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of machine learning for regression tasks.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Python or similar scientific programming environment.
- Ability to work with large datasets, develop reproducible workflows and apply modern data science tools.
- Strong organizational skills and a collaborative mindset: the ability to work effectively with international collaborators.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to write scientific publications independently.
- Good command of written and spoken English.

Conditions of employment
- Duration of contract is 9 months. Temporary.
- A job of 38-40 hours per week.
- Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
