How you can make your mark

Are you looking for a student job where your code is used on real offshore and dredging projects?

At Boskalis, engineers use Event Symphony, our in-house logistics simulation platform, to support decision-making during tenders and projects. Event Symphony enables engineers to evaluate work methods, fleet configurations, weather impacts, production risks, and operational bottlenecks before equipment is mobilized offshore.

By simulating complex logistics operations, engineers can compare alternatives, quantify risks, and make better-informed decisions for projects worth millions of euros. Event Symphony is actively used across Boskalis to support tenders, project planning, and innovation initiatives.

As a Simulation Software Engineer Intern, you will become part of the team developing and maintaining Event Symphony. You will work on real feature requests, usability improvements, and bug fixes that help engineers and simulation specialists use the platform more effectively. You will collaborate directly with simulation engineers, software developers, and AI specialists while gaining hands-on experience with software engineering, simulation technology, and maritime operations.

Your responsibilities:

  • Implement new features in Event Symphony.
  • Resolve backlog items and bug fixes from our GitHub development board.
  • Improve usability and user experience of simulation workflows.
  • Help develop and maintain Python-based simulation components.
  • Improve automated testing, documentation, and software quality.
  • Support the development of new simulation capabilities and tooling.
  • Work closely with simulation engineers to translate user needs into software features.
  • Learn how simulation and optimization are used to support major offshore and dredging projects.

Your qualities:

  • Experience with Python and SimPy.
  • Affinity with software development and/or problem solving.
  • Experience using Git and GitHub.
  • Interest in simulation, optimization, or engineering applications.
  • A proactive and curious mindset.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate with users and developers.

Do not worry if you are not proficient in all areas yet, we encourage continuous learning and development; your colleagues will help you out and we will provide on-the-job training for the right candidate.

The following competences are also important:

  • A good command of written and spoken English.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills as well as the ability to work independently.
  • A mindset geared towards continuous learning and curiosity for tackling new challenges.
  • Ability to handle feedback and reset your course if needed.

We offer

  • A flexible student position alongside your studies.
  • The opportunity to contribute to software that is used on real tenders and projects.
  • Supervision from experienced software developers, simulation engineers, and AI specialists.
  • Hands-on experience with Python software development in a professional environment.
  • Exposure to offshore construction, dredging, logistics optimization, and simulation technology.
  • A collaborative and innovative working environment.
  • Potential opportunities for internships, graduation projects, or future employment within Boskalis.

What you can expect

  • A dynamic environment: A job where you can make an impact, as part of an international team of experts.
  • Career development: We have a professional career development track for AI roles. Develop yourself with online courses at our Boskalis academy, both on personal and professional AI development.
  • Your team: You will be part of the central AI department, with teams of data engineers, software developers and AI engineers.
