This coastal engineering graduation internship focuses on Toe stability for Xblocs – (Partially) embedded toe.

This graduation internship is a collaboration between Haskoning and Delta Marine Consultants, a subsidiary of Van Oord. The internship offers a rare chance to gain hands-on experience with 2D physical model testing, directly contributing to real-world solutions in coastal engineering. If you’re eager to make a tangible impact and expand your technical expertise, this is a great opportunity.

What you will do as coastal engineering graduation intern

As a graduation intern, you will conduct 2D physical model tests on Xbloc armoured breakwaters using a wave flume. You will investigate how the rock toe geometry and its position relative to the first block affect the hydraulic stability of the Xbloc(Plus) armour layer. You will analyse and compare your experimental results with existing literature and empirical formulas used in the field, with the aim of deepening understanding and potentially proposing changes to coefficients and formulas for practical application.

More specifically, you will investigate the influence of lowering the toe level compared to the Xblocs along with the influence of increasing the toe width.

  • Conduct a literature study on toe stability.
  • Conduct 2D physical model tests on toe stability to investigate the influence of increasing the toe width and decreasing the toe level compared to the Xblocs.
  • Analyse and interpret the results and compare them to existing values from literature.

What you bring

You are an analytical Master's student with a strong interest in coastal and hydraulic engineering. You enjoy combining theory with practical testing and are motivated to translate experimental results into engineering insights. You work accurately, take initiative, and are comfortable collaborating with both academic and industry supervisors. The following is required:

  • Enrolled in a Master’s programme in Hydraulic Engineering, Coastal Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Able to spend multiple weeks in Gouda conducting the physical model tests
  • Able to work regularly from the offices in Delft and/or Amersfoort and/or Rotterdam
  • To ensure effective supervision, mentoring, and alignment with the internship and development programs, candidates must be enrolled at a Dutch university (WO) during the entire duration of the internship. This is a mandatory requirement for consideration.

What you can expect from us

  • Internship allowance 750 euro
  • Personal guidance from a dedicated mentor
  • Opportunity to contribute to impactful projects
  • Access to knowledge groups and development programs
  • Hybrid working and flexible hours
  • Informal and inclusive work culture with social and sports activities
