Are you an MSc student in Mechanical Engineering with an interest in precision mechanics, dynamics and mechatronic system design? Do you want to work on a challenging motion system in which accuracy, speed, stiffness and control all come together? We are looking for you!

Your assignment

In high-end printing systems, accurate sheet positioning underneath the printheads is essential for achieving excellent image quality. The Registration Unit is a highly dynamic system that ensures each sheet is aligned with great precision during transport. It can measure and correct multiple sheets per second in three degrees of freedom.

This alignment is achieved by four separately actuated wheels that must work together kinematically to continuously correct the sheet’s position and orientation on the fly. Several optical sensors accurately track the movement of the sheet. At the same time, the system requires highly accurate calibration, which is challenging due to the influence of mechanical tolerances and system complexity.

The registration unit consists of many mechanical parts with their own tolerances, and the kinematics of the system plays an important role in determining its overall performance. Therefore, a robust calibration method is needed to reduce the impact of mechanical tolerances on system performance.

Your assignment is to gain insight into the relevant tolerances and kinematics, improve the calibration procedure, and develop an automated calibration approach. You will implement and test your design (Matlab/Simulink) and demonstrate the performance in a real-life test setup.

Your profile

  • You are an MSc student in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related discipline
  • You have affinity with precision mechanics, dynamics and motion systems
  • You enjoy combining system thinking with detailed mechanical design
  • You have experience with modelling, calculations and preferably simulation tools
  • You are interested in mechatronic design, including actuation and control aspects

What’s in it for you?

  • A challenging assignment with skilled coaching
  • Internship/ Graduation compensation of €500,- per month
  • Travel cost compensation if you don’t have an ‘OV-weekcard’
  • The possibility to network with professionals inside and outside your field of expertise, thanks to our diversity of disciplines which you will work with
