Are you a Master’s student with a passion for data science and a strong interest in applying AI to real‑world challenges? Do you want to gain practical experience in or write a research thesis about the use of cutting‑edge machine learning techniques to help combat financial crime? Then this internship might be the perfect opportunity for you!
ABN AMRO’s Detecting Financial Crime (DFC) department is looking for a motivated Data Science Intern to join our diverse and internationally oriented data science team. In this internship, you will research and develop advanced NLP and transformer‑based methods to extract entities from payment data—an essential capability for identifying transactions executed on behalf of others. You will work hands‑on with Python, PySpark, and Databricks, collaborate closely with experienced data scientists, and contribute to impactful solutions that help the bank fight money laundering, fraud, and the financing of terrorism.
Your job
- Research state‑of‑the‑art data science and NLP methods to identify entities hidden within payment data.
- Develop AI and machine learning models—especially transformer‑based models at the character level—to extract entity information from financial transactions.
- Investigate the suitability and performance of transformer architectures for entity extraction in the context of counterparty identification.
- Design and implement methods to monitor the correctness, robustness, and ongoing quality of the developed models.
- Work with Python and PySpark in Databricks to build, train, and evaluate data science solutions.
- Transform your prototypes into internal data science products that can be used operationally within the Detecting Financial Crime (DFC) domain.
- Report your ideas, research findings, and progress through written documentation and presentations to ensure knowledge sharing and structured feedback, as well as produce a final research report for internal use and present your conclusions to key stakeholders within the organisation.
- Collaborate closely with a diverse team of data scientists and work responsibly with highly sensitive financial data, which will require appropriate personal screening.
Your working environment
You will join the Data Science Innovation team, part of the Innovation & Design division within the Detecting Financial Crime (DFC) department. This division is dedicated to developing cutting‑edge AI solutions that help the bank fight money laundering, fraud, and terrorist financing. You will work alongside highly skilled data scientists who bring diverse backgrounds, nationalities, and areas of expertise, creating a rich environment for collaboration and learning. The team is known for its open, research‑oriented culture, where experimentation, peer feedback, and knowledge sharing are part of everyday practice.
Your profile
- You are currently enrolled in a Dutch educational institution as a WO or HBO master’s student, pursuing a degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
- You have a strong passion for data science and are proficient in Python, with the ability to work with—or quickly learn—PySpark (familiarity with SQL is also an advantage).
- You have a strong affinity for data engineering and software engineering principles, and you enjoy working with large‑scale and complex datasets; previous experience with transformer models is an advantage.
- You are fluent in English and can communicate and present your ideas clearly in both written and verbal form.
- You are available to work for 4–6 months—during which you will remain enrolled in a Dutch educational institution—and can start as soon as possible, depending on your academic schedule.
- You are able to work from the office in Amsterdam at least twice per week to collaborate effectively with your team.
- You approach research in a structured, empirical manner, including the ability to hypothesise, test, validate, and compare results.
- You work well in a team environment and contribute actively to shared goals, while managing your time effectively and adapting easily to new challenges.
What we offer
- A personal work laptop to support your development and daily tasks.
- Monthly internship compensation of €750.
- An informal, multicultural, and highly professional work environment, where you will collaborate with experienced data scientists and key shareholders.
- Membership in the Young ABN AMRO Community, giving you access to social events, networking opportunities, workshops, and activities to help you integrate into the bank and connect with other young professionals and interns.
