This internship focuses on building a software interface between automated-vehicle motion planning and predictive vibrotactile cueing to help reduce carsickness.
Many passengers experience motion sickness when travelling, which is a challenge, especially in automated vehicles. Finding ways to reduce motion sickness is crucial to the success of future automated vehicles. At TNO, we have already shown that giving passengers auditory or vibrotactile cues can help them anticipate vehicle motion and, as a result, feel better. Building on this, we developed a car seat demonstrator with spatiotemporal vibration patterns in the seat. In this internship, you will help to bring that demonstrator to life by building an interface with the motion planning of automated vehicles. Development will first take place in a static driving simulator, but should eventually be usable in one of our automated CarLabs. This integration will enable us to test spatiotemporal cueing patterns across different motion manoeuvres to improve passengers' comfort in automated vehicles.
How can motion-planner vehicle-control signals be translated into input for vibrotactile motion cueing?
You will use TNO’s motion cueing demonstrator: a seat pad fitted with 24 vibration motors across the seat pan and backrest. Each motor can be individually controlled in terms of vibration intensity and duration through custom software written in Python and a graphical user interface (GUI). The goal is to connect this demonstrator to vehicle motion patterns as defined by the vehicle motion planner. You will develop a software interface in ROS 2 that translates the vehicle motion path into predictive motion cueing patterns. The results will allow TNO to easily test vibrotactile motion cuing (the goal of this project is purely the software interface between motion planner and cueing demonstrator, not the design and testing of the different spatiotemporal vibration patterns). The results will help the development of vibrotactile motion cuing as a motion sickness mitigation strategy in automated vehicles.
Proposed approach:
What can you expect of your work situation?
You will work at the Integrated Vehicle Safety department of TNO on the Automotive Campus in Helmond. In this department people are working on developing software for automated driving vehicles. The developed software is tested in pilots and on the public road. The department also develops methods to assess the safety and comfort on automated vehicles. The people are young, enthusiastic and driven. You will work in an open area, within your own team. One of our employees will be your mentor. S/he will help you to get acquainted with the department and give you guidelines for your research in order to help you to get the best out of it. Parallel to this internship, another project is planned to develop motion cueing patterns for the demonstrator. Input from that project will partly inform choices made in your internship.
The ideal candidate for this internship assignment has a background in automotive software development, with interest in improvements of (comfort in) automated vehicles. You have experience in working with Python; experience with ROS 2 is considered a plus. You are able to work independently, but also know when to ask for support. We expect you to be able to start as soon as possible. The assignment is designed as a 3 month project based on full-time availability. To ensure smooth collaboration and access to our tools, we require you to work at the TNO office in Helmond at least twice a week.
You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Furthermore, we provide:
At TNO, we innovate for a healthier, safer and more sustainable life. And for a strong economy. We find each other in wonder and ingenuity. We are driven to push boundaries. There is all the space and support for your talent and ambition. You work with people who will challenge you: who inspire you and want to learn from you. Our state-of-the-art facilities are there to realize your vision. What you do at TNO matters: impact makes the difference. Because with every innovation you contribute to tomorrow’s world.
Innovation with purpose: that is what TNO stands for. We develop knowledge not for its own sake, but for practical application. TNO connects people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the competitive strength of industry and the well-being of society in a sustainable way.
