Your lab is the place where experimental research is conducted on geothermal energy, CCS, subsurface storage and well abandonment. As an experimental engineer, you are at the forefront of these activities.

What will be your role?

As an experimental engineer in the Geoscience and Technology (GST) team, you will contribute to the development of innovative solutions for complex problems faced by the energy industry. Working mainly at our lab facility in Rijswijk, you will be responsible for designing, executing and reporting the results of a diverse variety of experiments. Using advanced equipment, you will implement and test ideas from external clients, your TNO colleagues and even your own ideas. To accomplish this, you will work as part of a professional team but you take ownership and responsibility for the tasks entrusted to you. Our international clients offer an opportunity to work with different cultures on unique research.

Another part of the job is to help ensure the lab equipment and facilities remain up to date with current market demands and in good working order.

The facilities include:

  • Drilling rig with a 387m research well and mud pumps
  • 400T Hydrostatic and 300T mechanical presses.
  • High Internal Pressure Equipment (HIPE).
  • 50T, 350 bar drilling simulator.
  • Lots of flow loops.

What we expect from you

As an experimental engineer we expect you to be involved in multiple projects across our project portfolio, while taking the lead on particular experimental set-ups. Examples of these are the Draglow flow loop and a tool that drills with high voltage sparks instead of mechanical grinding. Both are set-ups where multiple machines are connected for integral operations.

You are also able to work with other researchers to understand their domain-specific requirements and translate them into achievable experimental work plans. You have experience working with high pressure equipment (pumps, pipelines, pressure vessels), preferably in a laboratory setting, and have affinity with electrical systems for monitoring and sensoring of the equipment. A hands-on trouble shooting attitude without comprising safety is a requirement.

Qualifications and Qualities:

  • BSc/MSc in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, electrical engineering or similar
  • Not afraid to get your hands dirty
  • Experience with 3D CAD/Simulation. We use: Solidworks, ANSYS/Comsol
  • Risk management and safety awareness. A VOL-VCA will be required before you start work. TNO offers the opportunity to obtain de VOL-VCA.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English and preferably also Dutch.
  • Team player
  • High degree of autonomy and proactivity
  • Experience with process engineering flow schemes and design drawings is a plus
  • Experience with drilling equipment and their associated systems is a plus.
