About this position
Are you interested in how we can observe atmospheric pollution at the scales where it is actually emitted? At TNO, we combine advanced modelling with innovative observation techniques to improve how emission plumes are detected and quantified. In this project, you will use high-resolution large-eddy simulations together with radiative-transfer modelling to test the observability of turbulent plume structures and support the design of an upcoming aircraft measurement campaign. Your work will help bridge the gap between modelled reality and what instruments can truly detect, providing insight that feeds directly into future air-quality monitoring strategies.
What will be your role?
As an intern, you will work with high-resolution Dutch Atmospheric Large Eddy Simulation (DALES) model and apply radiative-transfer modelling to explore how turbulent emission plumes appear to airborne and satellite sensors. You will analyze plume evolution, test the detectability of emissions, and evaluate how different observational configurations influence retrieval sensitivity and performance. The results will directly support the design and interpretation of an upcoming aircraft measurement campaign and contribute to improved strategies for future air-quality monitoring.
You will work alongside a skilled and motivated team in TNO’s Air Quality & Emissions Research (AER) department in Utrecht, where collaboration, scientific depth, and a welcoming atmosphere define our approach.
What we expect from you
The ideal candidate has a background in Atmospheric Physics or Earth Sciences. Strong proficiency in Python is essential, and the ability to work with large datasets would be highly valuable. Familiarity with the fundamentals of atmospheric physics and Earth observation is considered a significant advantage. This internship can be carried out as part of a Master’s thesis project.
