Discover Your Next Challenge as a DevOps Engineer at Channable

Your job

At Channable, we have over 100 developers, building and launching features at a rapid pace to meet the demands of our customers in an ever-changing e-commerce environment.

As a DevOps Engineer, you will be joining a team of 9 and contributing to the improvement and scaling of our cloud infrastructure and the smooth operation of our tool. You will also help us improve and fine-tune our processes from provisioning, building and deploying, to monitoring and alerting.

We believe that a solid infrastructure can be a force multiplier for the rest of your development team, and that running code should not be a worry for the development team. Infrastructure should scale from initial prototype to mass adoption. As part of the DevOps team, that is what you will be working on.

At Channable, we process and move hundreds of billions of items per day on behalf of our customers. As part of the DevOps team, you will be helping keep the underlying systems scalable and reliable while maintaining cost-effectiveness. New systems replace old ones, continually removing bottlenecks.

You are expected to find the right tool for the different processes, or to write a custom one if it doesn’t exist yet. You have experience working on distributed and cloud systems and know how to manage large amounts of data. We are looking for someone proactive, autonomous, and keen to be a part of our DevOps team!

Your challenges:

  • Automating building, testing, provisioning, and deploying of our services
  • Managing our infrastructure as code (that can be reviewed and version-controlled)
  • Hardening and securing our internal and external systems
  • Improving and maintaining our monitoring and alerting systems
  • Developing new tools that help us make the process of building software even more efficient and enjoyable

Who are you?

Ideally, you have experience in software development and in keeping a complex distributed application running and secure at all times. You should be interested in declarative infrastructure, reproducible builds, continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD), dynamic resource scaling, security best practices, and general robustness of a distributed system. In more concrete terms, we expect you to have the following:

  • Experience in managing infrastructure with either GCP, AWS, or Azure
  • Experience with CI systems such as Semaphore, Jenkins, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, Travis
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code tooling, such as Ansible and Terraform
  • Good understanding of networking concepts and protocols (SSH, DNS, SSL/TLS, HTTP, etc.)
  • Deep knowledge of Linux and system administration tools, such as apt, systemd and bash
  • Security-awareness and familiarity with concepts like defense-in-depth and the principle of least privilege
  • Familiarity with Python
  • Commitment to high-quality engineering

And then some things are ‘nice to have’:

  • Familiarity with build tools such as Nix
  • Familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL
  • Knowledge of Hashicorp tools, i.e. Consul, Nomad, Vault, and Terraform
  • Hands-on experience with distributed systems

Some practical things we expect from you:

  • You are available for at least 32 hours per week.
  • You live in the Netherlands (or are willing to relocate) and own a work permit (if you’re a non-EU citizen).

Important note: we understand that studies show women may only apply for roles when they feel they meet 100% of the requirements; therefore, we strongly encourage you to apply even if you don't check every box, as we are looking for passionate individuals with potential and a willingness to grow.
