Are you passionate about building secure, scalable, and user-friendly WordPress solutions? At GÉANT, we power Europe’s research and education community by delivering cutting-edge digital infrastructure. As a WordPress Engineer, you’ll play a key role in managing and optimising our WordPress estate, ensuring our platforms perform flawlessly and securely. You’ll join a collaborative IT Operations team spread across Cambridge and Amsterdam, working alongside service desk engineers and SharePoint specialists. This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of WordPress development and support within a mission-driven organisation that connects over 50 million users across 10,000 institutions worldwide.

What You’ll Do

Develop & Customise:

  • Build and extend WordPress themes (including Elementor-based solutions).
  • Develop custom plugins to enhance functionality.
  • Design and implement new features for existing and new GÉANT sites.

System & Security Management:

  • Manage WordPress versions, plugins, and updates, including testing and troubleshooting.
  • Configure environments, workflows, and security settings for site owners.
  • Collaborate with operations teams to address security and functional issues.

Website Delivery:

  • Build or rebuild websites within our cloud-hosted WordPress environment.
  • Optimise SEO and performance across GÉANT sites.
  • Maintain clear documentation on the staff intranet.

User Support & Maintenance:

  • Resolve tickets raised by end-users and website owners.
  • Provide training and guidance to site editors.
  • Troubleshoot existing site configurations.

About You

You’re a full-stack developer with strong expertise in PHP, JavaScript, and CSS, and you have a proven track record of delivering secure, scalable WordPress solutions. You’re comfortable managing large-scale WordPress estates and thrive in collaborative environments.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Proficiency in PHP, JavaScript, and CSS.
  • Experience developing custom WordPress plugins and extending themes.
  • Familiarity with API integrations and Elementor.
  • Strong understanding of WordPress architecture, security, and performance optimisation.
  • Experience in cloud-hosted WordPress environments.
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Working Arrangements

We have adopted a flexible-hybrid model which means that employees will work flexibly between a remote and office environment. Weekly visits to the office are required for most employees to support our values and collaborative culture and enable our teams to deliver great work. For this role we anticipate that you may be required in the office for around 2 days per week.
