The internship
Sustainability and innovation are key values at The Kingfish Company. These principles form the base from which the company makes decisions about system designs, activities, and technology. In the coming years, production at our site in Zeeland will expand significantly. Seafood production inevitably is accompanied by the discharge of waste water and nutrients into the environment. The discharge of nutrients, especially of nitrogen and phosphorus, can cause eutrophication of surface water. In order to prevent this, we are implementing new innovations to produce our Dutch Yellowtail sustainably on a large scale.
We are currently building a full-scale waste water treatment plant. Together with several engineering companies specialized in waste water treatment, we have selected the technologies that will be used at our farm. However, several questions on configuration and operation of the wastewater treatment plant have yet to be answered. During your internship, you will help us get those answers by collecting data. You will assist in getting and keeping the full-scale waste water treatment installations running. You will collect water and sludge samples at regular intervals, analyze them in the lab, and report back to the waste water treatment manager. The results of your work will help us to identify bottlenecks and make adjustments where necessary.
The Kingfish Company
The Kingfish Company is a pioneer and leader in sustainable land-based aquaculture. We produce the yellowtail kingfish (also known as Ricciola/Hiramasa/Greater Amberjack), a highly versatile premium fish species well known in Italian and Asian fusion cuisines. Our operation is based on three core principles: sustainability, respect for our fish, and the environment. These key principles are at the heart of our design, activity, and technology decisions. Production of our fish is based on advanced recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), which create the ideal growth environment for kingfish, offer optimal biosecurity, and limit environmental impact. Animal welfare is paramount and our fish are grown without the use of antibiotics and vaccines. Operations run on 100% renewable energy, sourced from wind, solar, and biogas, and the company’s facilities operate on seawater to avoid wasting precious fresh water.
Current annual production capacity at our Kingfish Zeeland facility in the Netherlands is 1,500 tons of high-quality and high-value Yellowtail Kingfish. Expansion is underway and capacity in the Netherlands will reach 3,500 tons in the second half of 2022. In the US, permitting for the company’s approximate 8,500 tons capacity facility is progressing as planned, with production start scheduled for the second half of 2023.
We are a fast-growing company with multiple large-scale expansion projects currently underway and we are looking forward to welcoming new people into our team and exciting future.
