About this role
We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Technology Manager to lead our Identity and Access Management (IAM) team. This mission-critical role is responsible for the strategy, execution, and operational stability of our complex, multi-tenant authentication and authorisation platform, built around multiple scaled Keycloak deployments. The successful candidate will drive the modernisation roadmap, enhance security posture, promote technical excellence through an inner-sourcing model, and significantly expand the team’s technical capabilities in new stacks.
Reporting to: Manager Software Development
These are some of the key components to the position:
Strategic Leadership & Architecture
- Define and execute the long-term technical roadmap for the IAM platform, balancing the deprecation of legacy authentication services with the strategic evolution of the federated Keycloak architecture.
- Develop robust, scalable strategies for authentication and authorisation across distinct user personas (internal users, partners, logistics personnel, different end-customers) and various endpoints (users, devices/IoT, API-to-API communication, and more).
- Design and champion a unified security posture, including advanced bot and credential stuffing mitigation strategies implemented across CDN, WAF, and application layers.
- Oversee the design and implementation of a scalable, real-time event-driven architecture (e.g., Kafka) for security monitoring and event processing.
Technical & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and manage a blended team of Backend Engineers (Java/Quarkus) and Frontend Developers (Vue.js).
- Prioritise and execute a comprehensive up-skilling and cross-training programme to build internal expertise in C#.NET and significantly expand infrastructure and DevOps knowledge within the team.
- Cultivate a culture of high performance and agility, leveraging and promoting the inner-sourcing model to drive feature delivery, enhance code quality, and increase efficiency across the wider engineering organisation.
- Instill strong soft skills (e.g., collaboration, ownership) necessary for successful inner-sourcing and cross-functional delivery.
Operational Excellence & Governance
- Ensure service stability, resilience, and compliance for all critical IAM services, establishing and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) and non-functional requirements (NFRs).
- Drive the adoption of an effective, modular authorisation framework (e.g., ABAC, ReBAC) to manage fine-grained access control at massive scale.
- Manage technical debt associated with legacy systems while securing the necessary resources for modernisation efforts.
What will you bring to the team?
- Technical Depth: Extensive experience with complex, scaled Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions, specifically involving Keycloak or similar open-source Identity Providers (IdPs).
- Architecture at Scale: Proven experience designing and operating distributed, highly available, and high-throughput systems, including event-driven architectures (Kafka/messaging).
- Hands-on Stack Experience: Strong background in Java ecosystem (Quarkus/Spring) and exposure to modern frontend frameworks. Experience or direct knowledge of C#.NET is a significant advantage.
- Security Expertise: Deep understanding of modern authentication protocols (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect) and enterprise security challenges (bot mitigation, machine-to-machine authentication).
- Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading and scaling software engineering teams or senior/staff engineers.
Desired Attributes
- Familiarity with the challenges of managing federated identity across multiple deployments or realms.
- Prior success implementing or significantly leveraging an inner-sourcing model in a large technology organisation.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to articulate technical decisions in terms of business risk and value.
