In this position you will perform unique experiments at incredibly small scales, both in space (single atoms) and time (nanosecond quantum oscillations).

Job description

You will work on a dedicated research project in the field of atomic-scale spin dynamics. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) combined with electron spin resonance (ESR), you will address the spin states of individual atoms. By employing advanced nanosecond pulsed measurement techniques, you will study the coherent quantum dynamics of the electron, orbital, and nuclear magnetic moments of various isotopes. This research builds on recent achievements in our group, such as single-shot nuclear readout and electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR). The aim is to explore methods to control and read out spin systems that are more resilient against environmental decoherence, including nuclear spins and 4f-shell electron spins.

Our research group operates two state-of-the-art cryogenic STM systems, each optimized for ESR-STM experiments. As a postdoc, you will be responsible for the daily operation of the lab, ensuring, together with dedicated technical staff, that the equipment is properly maintained and remains at the forefront of innovation. In addition to pursuing your own research, you will guide PhD students working on related projects, assist the PI in planning experiments and determining the group’s long-term strategy, and occasionally (co-)supervise bachelor and/or master students in their graduation research projects. You are also encouraged to take an active role in our education program as a teaching assistant in a course related to your expertise.

Job requirements

  • PhD in experimental condensed matter physics or a closely related field
  • Knowledge of quantum mechanics, particularly electron and nuclear spins
  • Experience with ESR-STM, liquid helium, ultra-high vacuum, superconducting magnets, and RF electronics
  • Proven track record in writing international peer-reviewed scientific publications
  • Moderate to advanced programming skills, ideally in Python
  • Mastery of the English language, both spoken and written
