At Royal IHC’s head office in the Netherlands, we have an opening for a Legal Counsel with extensive knowledge of commercial law and significant hands-on experience.

In your role as Legal Counsel, you will report directly to the Head of Group Legal & Company Secretary and work closely with multiple stakeholders across the business, as well as your colleagues within Group Legal. You will provide high quality legal advice and support our business in various fields across the maritime industry, including dredging, mining, offshore, and defence. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to the continuous development of Group Legal and the further development, implementation, and maintenance of our legal framework.

You will be responsible for:

  • Providing tangible and hands-on legal advice in respect of commercial contracts (tenders, offers, and negotiations) and on strategic commercial initiatives.
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex contracts—such as shipbuilding agreements—and related documentation.
  • Maintaining and improving standard template agreements, including identifying new types of transactions that may require a standardised or alternative legal approach.
  • Promoting and executing cross-functional and international collaboration.
  • Providing proactive support and assistance to business opportunities through the identification, assessment, and management of legal and contract risks.

To be eligible for this role, you must have:

  • 5 to 10 years of experience in an in-house legal position or at a law firm (in an international setting).
  • An academic education in Dutch law.
  • Fluency in Dutch and English (both spoken and written).
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience with contract law and preferably construction law.
  • Sound understanding of both the legal and the commercial implications of contracting.
  • Experience and expertise on intellectual property protection and licensing.
  • Flexibility and well-developed stakeholder management skills across all levels of seniority.
  • Positive attitude, can-do mentality, and a practical, results-orientated approach.

Royal IHC offers you:

  • Gross monthly salary between €5700 and €8354 (depending on your experience), plus 8% holiday allowance (based on a full-time working week).
  • Good work/life balance with 40 vacation days based upon full-time employment, with buy or sell options for (additional) leave.
  • €0.21 per kilometer commuting allowance.
  • The possibility to work from home with associated expense allowance and/or to perform the work on the basis of flexible working hours (depending on the position).
  • An average salary pension scheme in which matters are properly arranged in the event of accidental death, incapacity for work, or unemployment.
  • Good disability insurance.
  • Participation (on a voluntary basis) in the Social Fund, on the basis of which care and related costs that are not covered by your health insurance are reimbursed.
  • Discount on VGZ's additional healthcare insurance.
  • Training/educational budget of €1,500 every three years.
  • Unlimited sporting in our own fitness room (in exchange for the sustainability employability day).
  • Profit-sharing scheme.
