Lead an Innovative Infrastructure Team at Channable

Your job:

We are looking for a new team lead for one of our Infra teams, which we call internally “Infra Blue”. In tandem with the other Infra team, called “Infra Red”, your mission in this role is to architect and deliver foundational services that empower the product engineering teams building our e-commerce platform.

Together with your team, you will be tackling challenging engineering problems, working on high-performing and scalable services written mostly in Haskell (although we also have some Rust), while also providing a high-quality developer experience for the teams that use them via Python.

Your time will be split approximately 50-50 between leadership tasks and hands-on development. As a team lead, you will mentor other team members, unblock them when they face challenging roadblocks, and help them grow both their hard and soft skills. As part of your hands-on work, you will contribute to the architecture, ongoing development, and maintenance of our services.

You will initially be managing a team of five Haskell engineers, and you will work closely with the engineering manager of the platform group, our technical product manager (who helps build the roadmap), and stakeholders from other engineering teams that consume our services.

Your challenges:

Team Lead tasks will include:

  • Organize the work and manage priorities
  • Plan sprints for your team
  • Collaborate with our technical product manager on the long-term roadmap
  • Mentor team members, help them grow, and conduct progress reviews
  • Set up project teams and mentor project leads
  • Interview and hire new team members
  • Implement and improve upon our processes for the team
  • Establish team culture and foster a collaborative environment

Development tasks will include:

  • Design, develop, and test new features in our services
  • Improve the reliability and robustness of our application
  • Work on scalability and performance improvements
  • Collaborate with and review PRs of other engineers
  • Break down big projects into smaller issues
  • Write clear and actionable issues
  • Debug and fix issues, and teach team members to do the same
  • Work together with our product engineering and DevOps teams on requirements and issues

Who are you?

You enjoy working in a dynamic team of skilled engineers, discussing technical decisions openly and collaboratively. You can break down big issues into smaller tasks and prioritize work pragmatically.

To set you up for success in this role, we think you'll benefit from having the following skills and experience:

  • Previous experience leading an engineering team, or at least 4 years of professional engineering experience and excited to start your career as a leader
  • Ability to give detailed code reviews from both high-level and low-level perspectives
  • Technical depth to help your team members grow and remove roadblocks for them
  • Substantial backend development experience, skilled with Haskell, and ideally comfortable with Rust and Python
  • Familiarity with relational databases (ideally PostgreSQL), Linux, and git
  • Experience with web development, web technologies, and APIs
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • People-oriented, open, and approachable attitude
  • Value high software engineering standards
  • Pragmatic and empathic towards team members and other stakeholders (e.g., colleagues from other departments)
  • Ability to help the team focus on the most important tasks, ensuring priorities and plans align with the rest of the company (we use the OKR framework)

Some practical things we expect from you:

  • Available for at least 32 hours per week
  • Live in the Netherlands (or willing to relocate) and own a work permit (if you’re a non-EU citizen)

Important note: We understand that studies show women may only apply for roles when they feel they meet 100% of the requirements; therefore, we strongly encourage you to apply even if you don't check every box, as we are looking for passionate individuals with potential and a willingness to grow.
