We’re exploring low latency real‑time audio streaming from embedded medical devices to web clients so clinicians can remotely hear device audio (e.g., fetal heart sounds) in near real time. This solution enables nurses and doctors to view patient data remotely via a web interface, reducing hardware costs and improving accessibility. WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is an open-source technology that enables real-time peer-to-peer communication between browsers and devices without requiring plugins.

This project aims to explore the feasibility of using WebRTC to stream audio between an embedded Linux device and a web browser. The intern will investigate both local network scenarios and cloud-based communication through NATs, firewalls, and TURN servers.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to

  • Work on a cutting-edge healthcare IoT project with real-world impact
  • Gain hands-on experience with AWS, WebRTC, and embedded Linux development
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers and clinical experts
  • Develop both embedded and cloud/web components for a complete demo solution
  • Learn about medical device connectivity, cloud architecture, and real-time streaming

You are responsible for

  • Researching and evaluating WebRTC for low-latency audio streaming in a medical context
  • Implementing embedded code on a Linux-based environment to stream audio via WebRTC
  • Developing a web application hosted on AWS to receive and play audio streams
  • Documenting your findings, implementation, and demo results
  • Presenting a working prototype and recommendations for future development

You are a part of

Multidisciplinary engineering design group, where an open environment is of great importance, and where self-development and asking questions is encouraged. You will be part of the Digital Processing group and working together with people from other groups in the Electronic Systems & IoT department. The Electronic Systems & IoT department is part of Philips Engineering Solutions and located on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven (the Netherlands).

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

  • BSc or MSc Student in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Embedded Software
  • Familiarity with programming in C++ on embedded devices
  • Basic HTML/JavaScript knowledge
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, UDP, NAT, firewall concepts
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Fluent in English
  • Affinity for both theoretical and practical work
  • Bonus: Experience with Node.js or Python

In return, we offer you

  • Monthly full-time allowance between €500 - €700 gross, depending on your education level and if you need to relocate to The Netherlands. Part-time internships receive the allowance pro-rata.
  • Housing compensation: If you need to relocate near our office, we offer a monthly allowance of €300 net if the location is in the vicinity of Amsterdam, or €255 net for all other Philips locations. To be eligible, you must provide a rental contract from your landlord, and your usual home-work travel distance needs to be more than 50 km or 1.5 hours of travel time (one way).
  • Travel compensation: If you are not eligible for a free public transport card, you will receive up to €192 net as a monthly allowance.
  • Paid holidays per internship term.
