About us

Damen Naval is the naval division of the family-owned Damen Shipyards Group, which employs 12,000 professionals globally. Join a team of more than 1,200 professionals based in The Netherlands, Romania, and Germany. Damen Naval designs and builds advanced naval vessels for customers all over the world. With a passion for technological innovation and sustainable solutions, we continue to push the boundaries in naval shipbuilding. You can be part of our team! Are you ready for duty?

The role

Electrical systems are at the core of almost every project at Damen Naval, transporting energy throughout the ship and ensuring that all systems have sufficient power to function. We are continuously improving our products, and developing the next generation of electrical systems is a key part of these developments. Ongoing research in this field is essential to shape the future of naval vessels and to provide tools and methods to further optimize the design of these systems.

Various graduate research or internship projects are available related to this topic, all supported by subject matter experts within the company. Some possible subjects are:

  • Design and integration of novel power generation and distribution networks.
  • Creating tools for the design and sizing of energy storage.
  • Market surveys related to new converter types and their applications.
  • Modeling of electrical system dynamics and their control.
  • Analysis of new converter types and their applications.

A combination of different subjects is possible. Damen Naval can provide readily available assignments, but it is also possible to propose your own specific topic of interest. Please indicate your preferences (or research topics of your own making) when sending your application.

Key accountabilities

As an intern or graduate student at Damen Naval, you may encounter multiple aspects of electrical systems engineering in various phases of ship design. Depending on the assignment, you are expected to select or develop the analysis methods and engineering tools needed to achieve your research goals. You will be responsible from day one for the planning and execution of your research project. You are expected to deliver a detailed in-depth analysis of your research problem and be able to communicate the results and conclusions to other departments.

Skills & experience

The ideal candidate for an internship or graduation project related to electrical systems has the following characteristics:

  • Top class Bachelor or Master student in Electrical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or Naval Architecture. Other equivalent fields of study may also apply or can be considered depending on the topic chosen for the assignment.
  • Passionate about ships and shipbuilding.
  • Independent, curious, analytical, and proactive.
  • Familiar with electrical systems (e.g. power generation, conversion, distribution), preferably on board of ships.
  • Basic experience with (electrical) simulation tools or a proven ability and specific motivation to become familiar with this subject in a very short time.
  • Able to use programming tools (e.g. Python, MATLAB, VBA).
  • Capable of identifying and communicating with multiple stakeholders.
  • Takes responsibility for own planning and project management.
  • Good command of the Dutch and English language, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent references and antecedents, as a pre-employment security screening is a standard part of the recruitment procedure.
  • Permanent EU citizenship and passport are both required. Candidates with NL/EU (work) visa or with both an EU and non-EU nationality and/or passport are not eligible, in accordance with the requirements imposed by the military nature of our projects.

What we offer

  • A monthly allowance for the duration of the assignment.
  • Proper mentoring at BSc or MSc level will be available throughout the project.
  • The ability to test and enhance your professional and social skills.
  • Acquired experience at a top tier company to add to your reference list.

Please note that due to the military nature of our projects, only candidates who have permanent EU nationality can be considered for vacancies at Damen Naval. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to process candidates who (also) have a non-EU passport or nationality. A pre-employment and security screening and investigation form part of the recruitment process.

Damen Naval does not approve commercial, contractor and/or agency or other commercial use of this advertisement. Proposing candidates without invitation is not appreciated and they will not be considered.
