Join Royal IHC as a Software and Controls Engineer

Introduction

At Royal IHC, we design and deliver innovative equipment and integrated systems for the maritime industry. Within our organization, IHC Smit is a key player focused on delivering high-tech solutions for dredging, offshore and mining applications. Engineering is the heart of what we do – and we’re growing. To strengthen our team, we’re looking for a Software and Controls Engineer.

In this role, you’ll contribute mainly technically to multidisciplinary projects, representing the software and controls discipline guided by experienced team members. You’ll be part of a dynamic company that offers real growth opportunities – both in expertise and leadership.

The Role

As Software and Controls Engineer, you will act as the technical representative for the controls discipline within project teams. You will work closely with engineers from other disciplines and departments to ensure integration of all systems. You will be tasked with designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining control systems for offshore and vessel-based automation environments. Your responsibilities will encompass working with advanced technologies such as PLCs, SCADA, HMI, drives, and safety-critical networks to ensure reliable integration and operation across tensioners, winches, and offshore platforms. This role involves both on-site and offshore assignments, providing direct engagement with complex offshore systems.

This is a great opportunity if you're looking for a role that balances technical depth with coordination and leadership. If you have the ambition to grow into a management position in the future, this role offers a clear development path.

Your Responsibilities

  • Develop and configure PLC systems (Siemens S7/TIA Portal) for IHC applications.
  • Design Profinet ring networks and ensure topology matches SCADA and electrical drawings.
  • Implement and test safety communication protocols and interlocks.
  • Support on-site commissioning and resolve control network issues (e.g., watchdog failures, SCADA mismatches) or diagnostics.
  • Use of tools for virtual commissioning and simulation of control logic.
  • Collaborate with software teams to standardize simulation across all projects.
  • Ensure all control systems comply with safety regulations and project specifications.
  • Liaise with engineers of other disciplines and commissioning teams.
  • Provide technical input during system upgrades and client reviews.
  • Participate in on-site commissioning activities and provide support during system integration.
  • Willingness to travel and work abroad as required by project demands.

Your Profile

  • You are a technically skilled engineer with a strong sense of ownership.
  • You enjoy collaborating across disciplines, and you’re comfortable taking the lead when needed.
  • You’re eager to keep growing – technically and professionally.
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or similar).
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong communication skills and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Proficiency in Siemens S7/TIA Portal, SIMIT simulation platform, WinCC Unified and SCADA systems.
  • Familiarity with safety systems, cyber security, redundancy protocols and hardware configuration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of Dutch is a plus.

What We Offer

  • A competitive gross monthly salary, aligned with your experience and expertise, plus 8% holiday allowance (based on a full-time workweek).
  • A good work-life balance with 40 days of leave per year (full-time), plus the option to buy or sell additional leave.
  • Voluntary participation in the Social Fund, which reimburses healthcare and related costs not covered by your health insurance.
  • Discounts on supplementary health insurance via VGZ.
  • Unlimited access to our on-site gym (in exchange for a sustainable employability day).
  • €0.21 per kilometer travel allowance.
  • A profit-sharing scheme.
